The Medicine Dream Denied: Why So Few Kenyan Students Get Into Medical School
Medicine and Surgery remains one of the most competitive courses in Kenya. This year, KUCCPS placed only 702 students into medicine across all public and private universities, despite over 6,500 applications. Many students with A and A- grades still missed out.
Even self-sponsored applicants are often rejected because universities cite limited capacity, and medicine transfers through the KUCCPS inter-institutional transfer portal are rarely approved for the same reason.
The shortage of slots is largely due to the high cost of training doctors, limited teaching hospitals, strict accreditation standards, and insufficient government funding. As a result, cluster points continue to rise while many qualified students are forced into other courses, KMTC programs, or expensive universities abroad.
Kenya needs more accredited medical schools, better-equipped teaching hospitals, and increased government-funded slots so that more deserving students can pursue their dream of becoming doctors.
