CHAPTER FIVE – JEALOUSY HAS A VOICE
Jealousy doesn’t always shout.
Sometimes it whispers — quietly, convincingly — until it sounds like truth.
That afternoon, Lilian was quieter than usual.
Her replies came slower.
Shorter.
The warmth I had grown used to feel… distant.
I told myself not to panic.
Houston was busy.
Life happens.
But my chest didn’t listen to logic.
Finally, I asked.
“Is everything okay, Lilian?”
Several minutes passed.
Then she replied:
Lilian:
I’m fine… just tired.
That wasn’t her.
So I called.
She answered, but her voice wasn’t the soft honey I knew — it was guarded.
“Hey,” she said.
“Hey,” I replied. “You sound far.”
She hesitated.
“Miradi… can I ask you something, and please don’t get angry?”
My stomach tightened.
“Ask.”
“Why does your friend keep watching my WhatsApp status?”
My blood went cold.
Kevin.
I closed my eyes.
“I told him to stay away from you.”
“He hasn’t texted,” she said carefully. “But he watches everything. It makes me uncomfortable.”
I clenched my jaw.
“I’m sorry. I’ll handle it.”
There was silence on the line.
Then she said something that cut deeper than I expected.
“I don’t want drama in my life, Miradi. I want something calm. Safe.”
Her words echoed.
Safe.
I had promised her peace — and yet chaos kept reaching her through people connected to me.
“I understand,” I said quietly. “And I won’t allow this anymore.”
After we hung up, I went straight to Kevin.
He was laughing on his phone, relaxed, and careless.
“Stop watching her status,” I said flatly.
He looked up, surprised.
“You don’t own her,” he said.
“I didn’t say I did,” I replied. “But you’re making her uncomfortable.”
He smirked.
“You’re already losing her, bro. I’m just closer.”
That’s when something snapped.
I stepped forward, my voice low.
“She chose me. Stay out of it.”
Kevin stood up too, eyes sharp now.
“Distance will kill whatever you think you have.”
Maybe he believed that.
But he was wrong about one thing.
Distance doesn’t kill love.
Weakness does.
That night, Lilian didn’t text.
For the first time since we met, I went to bed without hearing her voice.
Sleep didn’t come easily.

TEMPTATION
The next evening, she called.
Her voice was soft again — but cautious......
