One of nature's greatest spectacles –a rare total solar eclipse –cast its shadow on Wednesday, briefly turning day into night in Russia's remote Arctic north before heading towards mainland Europe.
The Moon first blotted out the Sun at the northernmost tip of mainland Russia at about 1700 GMT, leaving only the shimmering glow of its outer corona and eerie darkness.

Iceland's capital, Reykjavik, has not seen a total solar eclipse since 1433.

At least 44 people lost their lives when a ferry sank on Zimbabwe's Lake Kariba on Tuesday, the Zimbabwe Republic Police said, releasing an updated toll.
"The ZRP informs the public that the death toll in the Kariba RIDA boat accident is now 44," it said in a statement posted on X.

The boat, which provides transport between the northern town of Kariba and several islands and fishing camps, overturned after hitting strong waves.

The ferry "with 90 people and five crew members has capsized in Lake Kariba", police said.

Road injury mortality increased significantly in six countries between 2010 and 2023 — Ghana, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Armenia, Costa Rica and the United States. The increases ranged from 13.2 per cent in the US to 48.5 per cent in Ghana.
“Road injury outcomes are shaped not only by crashes, but by the systems designed to prevent them and protect people when they occur,” said Dr Liane Ong, senior research scientist at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) and senior author of the study.

Road injuries were the leading cause of death among people aged 10 to 39 and the second-leading cause of death among children aged five to nine.
