A very unpopular opinion, guidance is important but counselling in matters of love and individual lifestyle is a waste of time and totally unnecessary.
I'm a social worker who believes in self therapy- advising yourself based on how much your shoe pinches and where it pinches the most.
So to me as a therapy:
Client: I'm going through ABCD and I need your help.......
Me(the social worker and a certified therapist): Have you tried advising yourself?😁😁😁
No wonder I have never practised this part of my profession 😅😅

Life is so private, I have been to therapy twice. The first time(about 6-8 years ago cant remember clearly) was after one major break up🤣( Someone did not understand why I wasn't functioning normally and so they found me a therapist) I blocked the therapist after 1 week🤣🤣🤣. The second one(recent) was my own initiative when I was healing at some 'crime scene'🤪🤪 .This was very successful but again I blocked the therapist for bothering me too much in the name of follow up. Fact is I'm not a very sentimental person and I don't like explaining myself too much(I'm a true daughter of my father). If I ever confided in/explained anything to you, you must be very dear to me. Anyway, lately a lot has been going through people and Yes, It is okay to find professional help. But just how do you Identify the right help?
Today's session, I would like us to look at the different approaches used in conducting Psycho-social support and how you can identify a genuine service provider in psycho-social support.

One common myth about Social work is that, its only about giving handouts. In my experience here in Kenya this has been normalised such that any time you are assigned to carry out an exercise in the community the first expectation is that either "unapeana msaada" or the next action after your assignment should be "kuna msaada inakuja" You could actually use this line to get more people involved in whatever exercise you are undertaking but that's not right.
This has been made worse by leaders giving out handouts and call it a community empowerment exercise. I mean how do you empower an individual with Ksh 50/100/200...... maybe they could call it charity???
In today's lesson I would like us to understand what is Community empowerment. It is basically the act of enabling people to take control of their own development. It entails community members participation in decision making, planning, awareness creation, gaining access to resources, communities taking collective action and eventually self reliance.
In our next session we look at the process that should be followed when carrying out community empowerment programs.
