RESPECT 50-PLUS ONE VOTE, SAYS CHURCH
By ELIJAH KINYANJUI
Presidential contenders have been asked to assure Kenyans that they will accept the rule of fifty plus one vote win during the next elections.
The Nakuru Christians Professionals Association, Nakuru Church Elders Council, Nakuru branch of the National council of churches of Kenya, the Nakuru Fellowship of Christian Union and Nakuru Pastors fellowship organisations said the church needs to emphasize the need for the winner to be appreciated even if it is by one vote.
Addressing the media at the kingdom seekers Fellowship church, the organisations led by agriculturist Paul Mugo who is the founder of the The Nakuru Christians Professionals Association said the losers should accept because the new Constitution recognizes “even these minimal vote differences”.
Ugo said leaders need to learn to say yes when they lose and wait for the ency five year to try again.
“All are winners because in the presidential case, one of them will become the official opposition in parliament.
He said the five organisations has created over 90,000 manuals on peaceful elections that will be distributed to Nakuru residents ahead of the March 4 polls in a bid to foster harmonious coexistence during and after the exercise.
Nakuru Christian Leaders’ Platform chairman Sammy Ngahu said the manuals are to enlighten voters on importance of peaceful voting and their role in promoting good leadership under the devolved governance.
Ngahu was speaking at the Kingdom Seekers Fellowship Church on Saturday where members of the platform had converged to intercede for the country’s peaceful election.
He said they will also be rolling out a civic education programme to teach voters on the polling process so they are able to make wise decisions.
“What we experienced in the 2007/8 was horrible and we do not want a repeat of the same. As peace agents we will ensure that the manuals not only reach the people but that they adhere to the principals," he said.
