RESPECT 50-PLUS ONE VOTE, SAYS CHURCH
By ELIJAH KINYANJUI
Presidential contenders have been asked to assure Kenyans that they will accept the rule of fifty plus one vote win during the next elections.
The Nakuru Christians Professionals Association, Nakuru Church Elders Council, Nakuru branch of the National council of churches of Kenya, the Nakuru Fellowship of Christian Union and Nakuru Pastors fellowship organisations said the church needs to emphasize the need for the winner to be appreciated even if it is by one vote.
Addressing the media at the kingdom seekers Fellowship church, the organisations led by agriculturist Paul Mugo who is the founder of the The Nakuru Christians Professionals Association said the losers should accept because the new Constitution recognizes “even these minimal vote differences”.
Ugo said leaders need to learn to say yes when they lose and wait for the ency five year to try again.
“All are winners because in the presidential case, one of them will become the official opposition in parliament.
He said the five organisations has created over 90,000 manuals on peaceful elections that will be distributed to Nakuru residents ahead of the March 4 polls in a bid to foster harmonious coexistence during and after the exercise.
Nakuru Christian Leaders’ Platform chairman Sammy Ngahu said the manuals are to enlighten voters on importance of peaceful voting and their role in promoting good leadership under the devolved governance.
Ngahu was speaking at the Kingdom Seekers Fellowship Church on Saturday where members of the platform had converged to intercede for the country’s peaceful election.
He said they will also be rolling out a civic education programme to teach voters on the polling process so they are able to make wise decisions.
“What we experienced in the 2007/8 was horrible and we do not want a repeat of the same. As peace agents we will ensure that the manuals not only reach the people but that they adhere to the principals," he said.

Nakuru based pastors of The Ministry of Repentance & Holiness are appealing to Kenyans to repent for the sake of peace and harmony after the general elections in March 4 next year.

The preachers have said that the last post poll violence had been predicted by Prophet Owour and still predicts more violence unless Kenyans turn to God.

The Ministry of Repentance & Holiness is associated with self acclaimed prophet, Dr. David Owuor, famous for his 'end of world' kind of preaching.

A fierce scramble is in the offing pitting some Kalenjin leaders, seeking to be named ex-Administration Police Commandant Kinuthia Mbugua's running mate for the Nakuru county governorship race, against each other.
A section of the community's leaders are up against their Baringo originating Tugen counterparts arguing the Kericho-originating Kipsigis deserve the position since they are the majority residents of the community living within Nakuru County.
The scramble is intense amidst perceptions that Mbugua is so far seen as the front-runner for the governorship and the person he names his running mate is deemed to automatically become the Deputy Nakuru County Governor's if Mbugua wins the polls next year.
The salvo against Tugens is however perceived to be mainly aimed at a former commissioner of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission, Rev Lawrence Bomett, who is at the moment running against Mbugua for the governorship.
Other non-Kalenjin contenders for the seat include outgoing Nakuru Town MP Lee Maiyani Kinyanjui, Dr Francis Kiranga of Molo who is an economist and a youthful contractor John Mbataru Gakunga who is also a regional marketing manager of a multinational company.
The Kipsigis argue that they should be given the mantle of deputy governor because they have nearly 130,000 registered voters living in Nakuru county while the resident Tugens hardly number 15,000 voters.
While Bomett has been campaigning for the governorship alongside Mbugua on an Orange Democratic Party ticket, suspicions abound are that he is using the race to actually position himself to bargain for Mbugua's running-mate position that is believed to have been promised solely to the Kalenjins.
This is because of a belief that the county's first governor is likely to be a member of Mbugua's Kikuyu community as they are the majority populace while the Kalenjins are the second largest Kalenjin sub-tribe.
Among those campaigning for the running-mate position is Ezekiel Kesendany who professes to be an Ogiek but perceived to be a Kipsigis and who is amongst the crop of leaders who reportedly wen to Mbugua's then Harambee House office in Nairobi in 2010 and successfully urged Mbugua to join the governorship race.
Kesendany hails from Kuresoi south constituency and those against his candidature argue that he is unsuitable and unqualified as he allegedly does not possess a university degree as required by the new constitution for the position of deputy governor.
Another contender for the position is youthful Rongai politician Raymond Komen whose supporters have in various occasions been spotted carrying banners proclaiming him to be Mbugua's preferred deputy.
A third contender is said to be a former Nakuru District Education Officer Joseph Ruto who was reportedly recently "anointed, presented and approved" by Mbugua for the position by Kalenjin elders and who in the 1990's worked closely with Mbugua when he was Nakuru District Commissioner.

FORTY youths representing the 11 constituencies in Nakuru county have today warned leaders against concentrating on non-issues based campaigns.
Terming them “ cheap and petty politicians who portray poor leadership skills.”, the youth said that they are watching such politicians warily.
In a press statement read by their leader, Mike Gitone and Irene Njeri at a Nakuru hotel, they said Nakuru is still very sensitive considering its past history of tribal animosity.
“We need true leaders whose campaigns and leadership relay a message of security which is the main component in development of any institution or country,” said Gitone.
The group urged their age-mates to elect upright leaders and ignore empty promises while vetting leaders from their performance.
“The devolved system of governance requires a strong foundation for the prosperity of the constituents of this country”, said Njeri.
However, the youths vowed to take charge of the county's future, promising not to allow anyone to use them as agents of violence.
“All we need is a peaceful, prosperous and a model county because we are rich of resources”, she said.
They also asked the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to act against candidates who display acts of disrespect to their opponents and those found culpable charged in courts.
Their statement was issued barely a month after hate political leaflets were circulated in parts of the county by unknown people.

On Jamhuri Day, Rift Valley PC Osman Warfa said the government has identified four politicians suspected to be behind the leaflets and warned them that such actions will not be tolerated.
