The Political Battle Behind the Mau Evictees List and the Betrayal by Kalenjin Leaders.
I have been living in Mau for more than 20 years. I know what has been going on and what is happening.
The first evictions in Narok took place in 2005 when Mwai Kibaki was President. We had the late Kipkalya Kones, who stood up against the evictions. He was then the Assistant Minister for Public Works. Kalenjin leaders were against Kipkalya Kones, and they supported the evictions that were fueled by, Raila Odinga. President Kibaki later cancelled the active evictions through Kipkalya Kones and ordered a NO OBJECTION order. And families returned to their lands.
When the task force was formed in early 2008 that was pushed from the then office of Prime Minister, Kipkalya Kones was no more due to the helicopter crash that claimed his life alongside Lorna Laboso.
The task force committee was formed to review the boundaries of all water catchment areas. Kalenjin community leaders and opinion leaders were involved in the task force. The boundaries were reviewed and the report was adopted by the 10th Parliament, stating that anyone beyond the cut line would be evicted without compensation.
When the motion was passed, William Ruto, the current President, was the Minister for Agriculture under ODM before his suspension. All the senior leaders we had from our community were in Parliament when the motion was passed. Among them were Franklin Bett, who was the Head of Public Service and Controller of State House; Henry Kosgey, Minister for Industrialization; Sally Kosgei, Minister for Higher Education; Samuel Poghisio, Minister for Information; Kipkalya Kones, who was Roads Minister before his death in 2008; Franklin Bett, who later took in 2009 over the Roads Ministry; John Koech, who was later appointed Minister for East African Affairs; Lina Chebii Kilimo; and Margaret Kamar.
