A tourist has alleged that he was shot, detained for six days, and mistreated by authorities after mistakenly driving onto a restricted road in Ethiopia's Afar region during a journey in late July.
According to the traveller, he had already suffered a gunshot wound to the foot in an earlier attack by armed militants and was driving back to Addis Ababa for medical treatment when he reportedly missed a mandatory customs turn-off due to the absence of warning signs.
He claims armed federal police opened fire on his vehicle instead of stopping him, forcing him to abandon his car and flee across the desert despite his injuries. After being apprehended, he alleges officers forced him to run on his injured foot while his belongings were stolen from his vehicle during police custody.
The traveller further claims he was held under police guard at a hotel for six days and believes the detention was intended to pressure him into paying a bribe for an earlier release.
