TO GO IS TO SEE Expedition with a Mission #1 organized by Ngemi na Ndūhio.

Githunguri Teachers College was a hub for African nationalism before being closed by the British colonial government in 1952 during the Mau Mau Emergency. Founded by Mbiyu Koinange with Jomo Kenyatta as vice-principal, the college trained teachers for African-led schools, fostering intellectual resistance and eventually becoming a site for trials and executions by the colonial power.

Role in the Independence Struggle
Center for African Resistance: The college, along with the Kikuyu Independent Schools Association (KISA), was a visible symbol of Kikuyu nationalism and a key institution in the resistance against colonial domination.

Education for Empowerment: By training teachers for African-led schools, the college aimed to empower the local population and resist the colonial ideology that sought to limit access to higher education for Africans.

Symbolic Significance: After its closure, the British chose the former college site for the Lari Trials to make a symbolic statement, turning a symbol of Kenyan aspirations into a place of colonial repression.

Closure and Repression
Banned by the Colonial Government: On October 20, 1952, the same day the Emergency was declared, the colonial government banned the Githunguri Teachers College and all Kikuyu Independent Schools.

Site of Trials and Executions: In 1953, the college was used as a site for the Lari Trials, where gallows were set up to hang those found guilty of crimes related to the Mau Mau Uprising.

Founding and Leadership
Founded by Mbiyu Koinange: The college was founded by Mbiyu Koinange, a prominent African leader and nationalist.
Jomo Kenyatta's Involvement: Jomo Kenyatta served as the vice-principal of the college, further cementing its role as a nationalist institution.
