Client: Hey, can you make the article sound “natural,” “human,” and “authentic”?
Me: Sure! That’s literally what I do.
Client: Also, can you use AI to speed it up?
Me: …Define “speed.”
Client: Like, instant.
Me: Instant writing usually comes with instant regrets.
Client: But AI writes so fast!
Me: So does my two-year-old when she’s drawing on the wall. Speed isn’t the problem. Accuracy is.
Client: Okay. But can you just make the draft “less AI-ish”?
Me: You mean… human?
Client: Exactly.
Me: Which is what I originally planned before you asked me to use AI.
Client: So write it like a human wrote it.
Me: You’ve come full circle. Congratulations.
Client: And add personality.
Me: Wonderful. That part only comes from actual humans.
Client: Great. Then use AI.
Me: …I’m logging off.

We've avoided this em dash (—) discussion long enough. Pre-AI, did you ever find yourself using it naturally in your daily writing activities? Like, used it in an email, chat, ad copy, social media comment, or school paper? I'm almost certain your answer is no!

Don't forget how troublesome it is to add in an em dash in your writing. It's not on the keyboard, so you have to use the Alt + Ctrl + hyphen (-) shortcut. Given this difficulty, only a few writers would take the trouble to include it in their writing, let alone having even four in a single paragraph.

Apparently, ChatGPT is obsessed with these dashes because they're everywhere in the training data. It learned them as a default natural flow because humans used them so often (in the training materials). However, I've read so many articles and books since 2021 (pre-AI), and I hadn't seen much of them. So, I don't believe this.

Now, as a writer or student, trying to convince your client or professor that your writing is authentic/human when it contains three or four em dashes in every 5-7 sentences is not quite right. We all know you wouldn't do that. 🫣

So yes, I use the em dash only when I want to signal a sharp turn in thought, and that doesn't happen often. You'll have your employer/client questioning your work's authenticity for something you can minimize using, or ditch it altogether!

Ok, bye>
