For many households in Ugunja, cooking gas has become an essential part of daily life. From homes in Ugunja Town, Sikang' in Sidindi ward, to Ng'op Misengni in North Uholo and surrounding villages, more families have embraced LPG as a cleaner and more convenient cooking option.
However, the cost of refilling gas cylinders continues to strain household budgets. Across Kenya, 6kg gas refills currently average between KSh 1,300 and KSh 1,620, while 13kg cylinders range from KSh 3,000 to over KSh 3,500, depending on the brand and location.
The high prices have been attributed to global supply disruptions and the reintroduction of taxes on LPG, factors that have significantly pushed up the cost of cooking gas in recent years.
In Ugunja, many families say they are now taking longer before refilling their cylinders, while some have been forced to revert to alternative cooking fuels to cut costs.
Hotels, eateries, and small food businesses have also felt the pinch as operational expenses continue to rise.
Despite the challenges, cooking gas remains one of the most preferred energy sources due to its efficiency, cleanliness, and convenience.
