VIOLENCE AND A 50 YEAR JAIL TERM; THE CRIME THAT SHOCKED MARIMANTI.
A case that stunned residents of Marimanti and the wider Tharaka in 2020 remains one of the most disturbing criminal incidents ever recorded in the area.
The case involved James Kifo Muriuki, a resident of Kamatungu in Tharaka, who was later sentenced to 50 years in prison after being found guilty of a brutal attack against his wife, Charity Wairimu.
According to court records, the incident occurred on the night of May 16, 2020, near River Kathita. Investigations established that Muriuki lured his wife to the river under the guise of holding a private discussion before violently assaulting her over allegations of infidelity.
The victim sustained serious injuries and was left in critical condition. The couple's young child reportedly raised alarm through cries that attracted the attention of nearby residents.
The shocking attack sparked outrage across Tharaka Nithi County and prompted an intensive manhunt led by police officers and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Authorities tracked the suspect to Tseikuru in neighboring Kitui County, where he was arrested on May 21, 2020.
Muriuki was subsequently charged with several offences, including sexual assault, causing grievous harm, attempted murder and other related charges. He denied the accusations and remained in custody as the case proceeded through the courts.
After hearing the case, Principal Magistrate Njoki Kahara of Chuka Law Courts found him guilty in December 2022 and sentenced him to 50 years imprisonment.
The victim survived the attack but reportedly underwent a long and painful recovery process. She later spoke publicly about the challenges she faced following the incident and appealed for support to access medical treatment.
