One year ago today, Kenya witnessed a historic uprising led by Gen Z—a generation that shattered stereotypes, defied bullets, and rewrote the rules of protest. From the storming of Parliament to the streets flooded with hashtags and hope, their fight against economic injustice and police brutality became a global symbol of resistance.

As Kenya commemorates this anniversary, the flames of dissent burn brighter than ever. Here’s why:

1. The Uprising That Shook a Nation
On June 25, 2024, thousands of young Kenyans, armed with nothing but smartphones and solidarity, stormed Parliament to reject the IMF-backed Finance Bill. The bill’s punitive taxes on essentials like fuel and mobile money ignited a fire, but the protests quickly became about more—a demand for dignity, jobs, and an end to state violence.

-The Toll:
At least 65 protesters were killed, 1,500 arrested, and 89 forcibly disappeared. Families still seek justice for victims like Eric Shieni, a finance student shot dead by police.

- The Legacy:
The protests forced President Ruto to withdraw the bill and sack his cabinet, but unmet demands—67% youth unemployment, soaring living costs, and IMF austerity—keep the anger alive.

2. Gen Z: Myths vs. Reality
Kenya’s youth are often labeled "lazy" or "apathetic." The truth? They’re the most educated, digitally savvy, and politically engaged generation in history.

- Employment Paradox:
66.7% of Gen Z are unemployed, yet 82.9% call themselves "ambitious." They’re hustling in tech startups, creative gigs, and activism—but systemic barriers (like skill mismatches and corruption) lock them out.

- Digital Warriors:
96% rely on mobile phones to organize and amplify their voices. Hashtags like trended globally, exposing state brutality in real-time

- Cultural Shift:
While 27% are accused of abandoning traditions, 27.6% fiercely uphold them. This generation balances global trends .

The last three decades have been a whirlwind of radical change—technological leaps, economic instability, political upheaval, and social transformation. From the dot-com boom to the AI explosion, tech has reshaped every aspect of life, yet left millions behind in an era of vanishing jobs, gig economy exploitation, and corporate monopolies.

💻 **The Digital Revolution (Positive):**
- The internet democratized knowledge, connected the world, and birthed new industries.
- Smartphones put global power in our pockets—banking, education, and activism at our fingertips.
- Social media gave voices to the marginalized, fueling movements like and BLM.
- Remote work broke the 9-to-5 chains, offering flexibility (for those who could access it).

📉 **The Cracks in the System (Negative):**
- **Economic Warfare:** 2008 crash, inflation, and corporate greed turned millennials into the first generation poorer than their parents.
- **Job Apocalypse:** Automation, outsourcing, and precarious gig work erased stability—side hustles became survival, not passion.
- **Mental Health Crisis:** Loneliness, anxiety, and depression skyrocketed in the age of hyper-connection but real disconnection.
- **Political Chaos:** From hope (Obama) to division (Trump, populism, culture wars), trust in institutions collapsed.
- **The Drug Epidemic:** Opioids, fentanyl, and self-medication became escapes from a broken system.

🔓 **The Rebellion:**

However, critics say it leads to wealth inequality, worker exploitation, and environmental destruction—especially in poorer countries.

# # # **How Capitalism Works Globally**
In wealthy nations, capitalism has led to technological advancements and high living standards for many (though not all). But in **third-world countries**, the system operates differently. Western corporations and wealthy nations dominate global trade, setting rules that benefit them while keeping poorer nations in a cycle of dependency. Institutions like the **IMF and World Bank** often impose harsh policies—like privatization and austerity—on struggling countries in exchange for loans, worsening poverty.

# # # **Exploitation of Labor & Resources**
Many multinational companies move factories to third-world nations to take advantage of **cheap labor and weak regulations**. Workers in countries like Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Honduras endure long hours, unsafe conditions, and wages too low to live on—while corporations make billions. At the same time, rich countries extract **oil, minerals, and agricultural products** from poorer nations at unfair prices, leaving them with environmental damage and little economic benefit.

Global capitalism forces third-world countries to focus on **exporting raw materials** (like coffee, cocoa, or oil) instead of building their own industries. This keeps them trapped in poverty because:

"Where do we go?"

Palestinian artist Belal Khaled delves into themes of displacement and survival, drawing a link between the water truck from Ghassan Kanafani's novel Men in the Sun and the water trucks currently used by displaced Gazans.

In this piece, the truck carries dual narratives: the vehicle that bore witness to the tragic suffocation of those seeking safety in Kanafani's novel mirrors the trucks now providing temporary refuge to Gaza's displaced. It becomes a vessel for their stories and pain as they journey in search of safety amidst devastation.

This work was realized in collaboration with Qatar Reads, Qatar Auto Museum, and Seashore Group.

Sad how fast we are entering a world of irrational exuberance and conspicuous consumption. Those few that share a rising proportion of the worlds wealth are struggling to consume it. How many pizzas can you eat a day, how many cars can you drive, how many beds can you sleep in and how many tvs can you watch. They are running out of ideas to materialise this notional concept of wealth into the real world and have a surplus of stranded assets. Other than prestige, status and power it’s difficult to really consume that much wealth before you die.

It's fascinating, isn't it? How the world is so vast and filled with so many people, yet most of us will never cross paths or even be aware of each other's existence. If you're reading this, it's probably the first—and most likely, the last—time you'll ever encounter me. In a way, we’re all just fleeting moments in each other’s lives, passing by like ships in the night, unaware of the infinite stories unfolding around us. The world is full of untold stories, lives unfolding, dreams being chased, yet most of these will remain unknown to us. It's a humbling thought, realizing how small and vast our individual existences really are, how we’re all part of something so much bigger than ourselves. A brief interaction, a quick glance, and yet, it’s a reminder of the randomness and beauty of life itself.
