Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has welcomed the High Court's decision to nullify the government's sale of a 15 per cent stake in Safaricom PLC to Vodacom, describing it as a victory for Kenyans.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Kalonzo, who was lead counsel in the case, said the judgment upheld the petitioners' concerns and called for the shares to be returned to the Government of Kenya.

A three-judge High Court bench ruled that the transaction was unconstitutional, null and void, and ordered the 15 per cent Safaricom stake to revert to State ownership. The judges said the sale did not meet constitutional and legal requirements, including adequate public participation and full disclosure of key information.

The court also quashed approvals linked to the transaction, including Sessional Paper No. 3 of 2025, and invalidated any merger, acquisition or takeover arising from the deal. The government had sold the stake to Vodacom for KSh204.3 billion, with the agreement completed on June 30, 2026.

The parents of slain journalist Sharon Otieno have asked the court to consider reconciliation and grant former Migori Governor Okoth Obado a non-custodial sentence during sentencing in the murder case.

Through their lawyer, the parents told the court they wished to reconcile with Obado and requested that he be spared a prison term. They said they had maintained a cordial relationship with the former governor, including before Sharon's death.

The request was made as the court received sentencing submissions for Obado, Caspal Obiero and Michael Oyamo, who were all convicted of Sharon Otieno's murder.

While acknowledging the family's views, the prosecution argued that sentencing is ultimately the court's responsibility because the case is an offence against the state. Prosecutors urged the judge to consider the seriousness of the crime, saying the murder was premeditated and carried out through a coordinated plan involving all three convicts.

Seven people have been arrested after detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) dismantled an alleged counterfeit maize flour operation in Kasarani, Nairobi.

The suspects were arrested during a raid at a warehouse in the Canaan area near Infinity Industrial Park, following intelligence reports linking the premises to a coordinated fake flour distribution network.

According to the DCI, the warehouse had been converted into an illegal repackaging centre where counterfeit maize flour was packed into bags bearing the names of well-known brands before being distributed to the market, deceiving consumers about the products’ authenticity and safety.
