The Nairobi County Assembly has stated that the death of Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve might have been prevented had a persistent blood clot in his leg been identified and treated earlier.

County Assembly pathologist Dr. David Atandi and lawyer Biko Ashioya revealed that Munuve had been living with the clot for some time before it dislodged and traveled to his heart.

“The clot had existed for a while. It moved from his leg to his heart — something that could have been prevented,” said Ashioya.

A joint post-mortem by independent and government pathologists confirmed that Munuve died from a massive pulmonary embolism — a large clot blocking a main artery in the lungs.

Dr. Atandi explained that while Munuve appeared physically healthy on the outside, internal examination showed a completely blocked major vessel and a non-functional left lung.

Pope Francis’ funeral Mass began on Saturday in St. Peter’s Square, where his wooden coffin was carried out of the basilica to the sound of tolling bells and a wave of applause from thousands of mourners, including global leaders, clergy, and pilgrims.

The coffin, adorned with a large cross, was borne by 14 pallbearers in white gloves and placed before the altar on a red carpet, topped with the Book of the Gospels. The open-air service, set to last 90 minutes, was led by 220 cardinals, 750 bishops, and over 4,000 priests.

Cardinals in red robes sat opposite rows of black-suited dignitaries, among them U.S. President Donald Trump, who had frequently sparred with Francis over immigration. Behind them stood thousands of priests and laypeople, many of whom had camped overnight to secure front-row spots.

“We came to say goodbye to a living saint—so humble and simple,” said Mary James, a Franciscan nun who had spent the night outside the Vatican.

The Argentine pope passed away on Monday at age 88 following a stroke, initiating a solemn period of transition for the 1.4-billion-member Catholic Church, marked by tradition, mourning, and ceremony.

Gaza’s civil defence agency reported that at least 17 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Saturday, with more feared trapped beneath the rubble after a family home was hit.

The renewed strikes come after Israel resumed its military offensive in the Gaza Strip on March 18, ending a two-month truce that had mostly paused hostilities.

“Israeli air strikes in several areas killed 17 people since dawn,” civil defence official Mohammed Al-Mughayyir told AFP.

An autopsy has confirmed that Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve died from a blood clot in his lungs, known as a pulmonary embolism. The postmortem examination ruled out any foul play. Munuve, 42, passed away on April 22, 2025, after a brief illness.
The examination was conducted by Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor, who noted that Munuve had suffered multiple blood clots, one in the lungs and another in a limb, leading to a lack of sufficient oxygen in his body. Dr. Oduor emphasized that there was no evidence of external injuries or poisoning. The findings have been accepted by both the family and government authorities.
Munuve had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Nairobi before his death. His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from local leaders and residents of Kariobangi North.
The MCA's death has been attributed to a medical condition, with no indication of foul play, as confirmed by the postmortem results.

CS Duale Forms Independent Committee to Probe Mediheal Organ Trafficking Scandal

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has launched an independent 13-member investigative committee to probe allegations of organ trafficking involving Mediheal Group of Hospitals. He assured the public that the investigation will be free from interference and focused on uncovering the truth.

Duale emphasized that the probe will not only target Mediheal but will also involve physical audits of all transplant facilities across the country. He stressed the need for transparency, accountability, and reform in the country’s organ and tissue transplant systems.

"This process is about truth and justice. We will not protect anyone involved in wrongdoing, nor will we tolerate impunity," he stated.

The move comes after Duale suspended two senior Ministry of Health officials last week for allegedly manipulating findings of a previous committee report from 2023. He criticized what he described as coercion and undue influence during that investigation, promising that the new committee will operate independently without political or institutional pressure.

The committee's mandate includes auditing transplant centres, reviewing legal and ethical policies, and scrutinizing consent and governance systems, particularly those at Mediheal.

Main suspect in Siaya arson incident apprehended in Nairobi.
A key suspect in the devastating arson attack that claimed the lives of nine family members in Siaya has been arrested in Nairobi.

The 56-year-old man was apprehended in Kibra while having dinner with his children. He had reportedly gone into hiding after learning that detectives were closing in on him. Police acted swiftly after receiving a tip-off just a day after the tragic fire in Upanda village, Sigomere, Ugunja subcounty.

The incident saw an entire family—two parents and their seven children—perish in the blaze. Neighbours in Kibra grew suspicious after the suspect, identified as Owino, mentioned he had traveled to his rural home on the night of the fire.

With the support of local leaders in Kianda, Kibra, police arrested him and are preparing to transfer him to Siaya for further questioning. Kilimani subcounty police commander Patricia Yegon confirmed the arrest, noting that coordination with Ugunja police is ongoing to finalize details of the case.

The suspect’s wife had earlier been arrested in Sigomere after a fuel container, believed to have been used in the attack, was recovered.
