Because Ethiopia uses a different calendar system—called the Ethiopian (or Ge’ez) calendar—which is about 7–8 years behind the Gregorian calendar that most of the world uses.

Here’s why:
• The Ethiopian calendar is based on the older calculation of the date of Jesus’s birth, following ancient Alexandrian (Coptic) traditions.
• Early church scholars in the West later revised that calculation, which is what the Gregorian calendar (our “normal” calendar) follows. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church kept the original calculation, so their year count stayed about 7 years and 8 months “behind.”

How it works:
• Ethiopia’s year starts on Mäskäräm 1 (September 11 or 12).
• Their calendar has 12 months of exactly 30 days plus a short 13th month, called Pagume, with 5 or 6 days depending on leap year.

So when the rest of the world entered 2025, Ethiopia celebrated Enkutatash (New Year) and stepped into 2018.
It’s basically like living in a different “time zone” of history—without a time machine!
