There is growing concern following recent unrest at Multimedia University, where confrontations between protesting students and police resulted in serious injuries.
Reports indicate that students took to the streets to express grievances over campus issues, leading to a standoff with law enforcement. During the chaos, live ammunition was reportedly used, leaving several students injured and in need of medical attention.
While maintaining public order and safety on busy roads is a necessary duty for law enforcement, the use of excessive and lethal force against unarmed youth must be condemned. Universities should remain safe spaces for dialogue, and the escalation into violence is deeply troubling for parents, students, and the general public.
At the same time, it is vital to acknowledge the challenges faced by police officers when protests disrupt public order, traffic, and local businesses. However, crowd control should always prioritize human life, using non-lethal methods to restore calm without putting young lives at risk.
Both student leaders and university authorities need to seek peaceful, structured ways to resolve grievances rather than resorting to disruptive street actions. Peaceful dialogue is the only sustainable way to prevent such dangerous situations from happening again.
We call for a quick and transparent investigation into the shooting to ensure accountability. Our thoughts are with the injured students and their families, wishing them a speedy recovery.
