Big George or Big G, was the man behind Kenya’s most iconic chewing gum. In 1971, he made history as the first Kenyan employee at Wrigley East Africa, joining as a marketer. Dissatisfied with the small gum pellets then dominating the market, he came up with the idea of a larger, uniquely packaged gum. That innovation birthed Big G, instantly recognizable with its red wrapper and yellow branding.

By the early 1980s, Big G had taken over the market, becoming a household name loved across generations. Owino’s vision and aggressive marketing turned the gum into a cultural staple. His success saw him rise through the company ranks, eventually serving as Wrigley’s East Africa chairman until his retirement in 1998.

Born in 1941 to Patrick Owidh and Maria Obiero, Owino grew up an only child, studied at Sega Primary and Shimo la Tewa Intermediate, and built a legacy that lives on long after his passing in July 2004.
