In connection with the recent event, which greatly affected the community of Kyrgyzstan, the topic of bride kidnapping has now become the main topic of discussion nationwide. Everyone is shocked by how easily a man kidnapped a girl and killed her because she refused 2 weeks ago. The most horrifying fact is that this happened in the 21st century, when it seems that stealing brides is a tradition that is no longer relevant. But through this recent event, the chilling fact that this practice is still happening became very clear. Imagine for a moment that this could happen to you or to someone from your loved ones, whether it be a daughter, a sister or a girlfriend. It is something that is unacceptable and disturbing.
For the past 4 years, we were producing the film “After The rain”, which is a story that shows how different this issue could be if a family's love for their daughter was higher than the taboo of “shame” and "what would others would say?”. Maybe for many of us, who grew up in Bishkek or the Western World, this may seem strange. If we are kidnapped, it is so obvious that our parents will try to save us and report this act as a crime. But for many girls from traditional families, the reality is very different. If they are abducted, the girl’s parents are the first ones to tell them to stay with this man, for returning home means a disgrace to the whole family. We often come across families in Kyrgyzstan where husbands beat their wives, and the parents of these women simply say to just tolerate it, because if she leaves her husband- it is labeled as “shameful”.
With this film, we want to say that the life of the daughter should never be considered lower than the honor of the family or what others would consider as shame. We want to show that the family’s love and support for the daughter is able to work miracles and heal any wounds.
