After reading This I have only one concern, is actually a question::. When can I start building the future I imagined?
While discussing automation, AI, and the long-term future of work in a public conversation about technological disruption, Elon Musk offered a prediction that sounded optimistic and unsettling at the same time.
“My prediction for the future is universal high income and social unrest.
There’s going to be so much change.
Be careful what you wish for, you might get it.”
Then he pushed the thought further.
“If you get all the stuff you want… is that actually the future you want?
It means your job won’t matter.”
This isn’t a warning about poverty.
It’s a warning about purpose.
Universal income solves survival.
It doesn’t automatically solve meaning.
For most of human history, work wasn’t just income, it was identity, contribution, and proof of usefulness.
AI may give us abundance faster than we’re ready for psychologically.
And when effort disconnects from reward, society doesn’t just change economically —
it changes emotionally.
The hardest question of the AI era might not be how we live… but why.
If work stops defining value, what do you think will?
