Cambodia exports 60,000 tonnes of to for 1st time

Cambodia on Friday exported its first batch of milled rice to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), said the country’s Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul.

Cambodia exported over 656,000 tonnes of milled rice in 2023, marking a 3% increase from the previous year and generating over $465 million in revenue, a rise of 13%, as reported by the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF), the Kingdom’s apex rice industry body.

Exports to Indonesia in the first 11 months of 2023 more than doubled, with the value of trade between the two countries reaching nearly $1 billion. Cambodia set to continue export duty incentives in rubber sector

Cambodia is set to offer tax incentives for another two years on rubber exports, starting from January 1, 2024, aiming to encourage cultivation and support growers and exporters in the face of declining prices due to a drop in international demand.

One woman’s mission to elevate Cambodian cashews on the global stage​

Born in Stung Treng, Muth Chakrya established a cashew nut shop in Sre Krasaing Village of the province’s Siem Bok District. During the Covid-19 pandemic, she experienced a severe financial crisis, leading her to abandon her role as a broker in purchasing agricultural products from farmers. The crisis prompted a prolonged visit to her hometown.

It was during this time that she transformed the crisis into an opportunity, starting Handcrafted Cashew Nuts Stung Treng, with a capital of $20,000. Her shop enabled farmers to sell their nuts at reasonable prices for domestic production.

Having started with $20,000 just two years ago, her business has now grown to a value of $1 million and provides employment to 45 people. Chakrya harbours ambitions to export Cambodian cashew nuts to international markets worldwide.Charkyra recently shared insights about her company’s evolution and future goals.

Cambodia earns over $445 million from rubber exports in the first 11 months

Cambodia exported 334,176 tonnes of dry rubber in the first 11 months of 2023, up 3.6 percent from 322,586 tonnes over the same period last year, said a report from the General Directorate of Rubber on Friday.

On 15 December 2023, H.E. Chea Serey, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia attended the 2023 MOEF-BOK-FSC-IMF International Conference in Seoul, Korea. The theme of this conference is Digital Money: Navigating a Changing Financial Landscape.

Digital money has become a global topic in recent years given its potential benefits that can boost productivity and improve economic outcomes in particular it can improve efficiency, lower costs, and enhance financial inclusion.

However, digital money also brings about some concerns on financial stability and stronger consumer protection. The conference gathered strong mind and talents of policy makers and academia around the globe to share experiences and discuss on major policy dilemma surrounding digital money.

H.E. Chea Serey, shared her perspective on digital money provided that Cambodia has already launched the Bakong system where can be considered as one form of digital money with many features similar to that of the Central Bank Digital Currency.
