SAMDECH TECHO HUN SEN: STOP PURCHASING THAI GOODS AND STOP USING THAI BAHT
October 6, 2025 – In a recent social media post reacting to a video that’s circulating in social media that shows a Thai game in which participants fired at his image to win prizes, Samdech Techo Hun Sen encouraged Cambodians not to retaliate or in any way not imitate what he describes as an “inhumane behavior”.
Samdech Techo instead encourages Cambodians who are outraged by this Thai action to boycott Thai goods and Thai baht, “If you are hurt by or unhappy with Thailand, please refrain from purchasing Thai goods and stop using the Thai baht in Cambodia to strengthen our national monetary independence.”
Samdech Techo also tells Cambodians not to target any Thai company or Thai citizens living in Cambodia, “Please do not take any actions that would affect Thai companies or Thai citizens who are living and working in Cambodia. I still believe that the majority of Thai people do not want to be enemies of the Cambodian people.”
Samdech Techo also emphasizes that the current border conflict with Thai has helped Cambodia’s economy, strengthening its local production and consumption, “I should thank the Thai leaders for unintentionally doing us a favor. Cambodia has spent no less than five billion US dollars annually to purchase Thai products. Redirecting this spending to local products would provide a market and opportunity to strengthen the Cambodian economy.”
Samdech Techo continues to clarify that Thailand should not belittle Cambodia’s economic capacity, “We never asked for Thai products to be sold in our markets. We paid for them. Thai leaders must not misunderstand or continue to belittle Cambodia. We know Thailand is wealthier than Cambodia, but you should also acknowledge that we spend money to buy your goods, which contributes to income for the Thai people”
Samdech Techo also encourages Cambodian sellers at the border to switch to using Khmer Riel or US Dollars, “I want to inform our people, especially those living near the Thai border, to urgently exchange Thai baht for riel or US dollars, because in the near future you may face heavy losses. The baht could become a point of vulnerability, used for pressure, just as we’ve seen in past situations involving electricity, internet, and fuel.”
