Thai Troops Violate Ceasefire, Attack Cambodian Civilians and Monks with Rubber Bullets and Tear Gas
Banteay Meanchey, Cambodia – September 17, 2025
Tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border flared once again on Tuesday afternoon when Thai soldiers crossed into Cambodian territory and violently attacked civilians in Prey Chan village, O’ Bei Choan commune, Ou Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey province.
Eyewitnesses reported that Thai forces, equipped with shields, batons, and fi****ms, fired tear gas canisters, rubber bullets, and deployed sound-disrupting devices that caused hearing damage among villagers. Among the victims were Buddhist monks and ordinary civilians, several of whom sustained visible injuries. Images from the scene show wounded monks and villagers with rubber bullet marks and lacerations, underscoring the severity of the assault.
The Cambodian armed forces, adhering strictly to the ceasefire agreement, did not retaliate but instead held their positions to shield the population. Officials in Phnom Penh have condemned Thailand’s repeated provocations as a blatant violation of both the bilateral ceasefire commitments and Cambodia’s sovereignty.
“These actions are not only hostile but also unlawful under international norms,” said a Cambodian government spokesperson. “Targeting unarmed civilians and Buddhist monks with weapons is an unacceptable act of aggression that threatens peace and stability in the region.”
This latest incident is part of an alarming pattern of incursions by Thai forces along the border, heightening fears of escalation despite ongoing ceasefire arrangements. International observers and human rights organizations are being urged to monitor the situation closely and hold Thailand accountable for violations of humanitarian law and Cambodia’s territorial integrity.
The Cambodian government has called on the United Nations, ASEAN, and the broader international community to condemn Thailand’s aggression and pressure Bangkok to respect its obligations under the ceasefire and international law.
As Cambodia continues to prioritize peace and restraint, this attack raises pressing questions about Thailand’s commitment to regional stability and respect for its neighbor’s sovereignty.
