Breaking:
Thai Troops Violate Ceasefire, Attack Cambodian Civilians and Monks with Rubber Bullets and Tear Gas

Banteay Meanchey, Cambodia – September 17, 2025

Tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border flared once again on Tuesday afternoon when Thai soldiers crossed into Cambodian territory and violently attacked civilians in Prey Chan village, O’ Bei Choan commune, Ou Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey province.

Eyewitnesses reported that Thai forces, equipped with shields, batons, and fi****ms, fired tear gas canisters, rubber bullets, and deployed sound-disrupting devices that caused hearing damage among villagers. Among the victims were Buddhist monks and ordinary civilians, several of whom sustained visible injuries. Images from the scene show wounded monks and villagers with rubber bullet marks and lacerations, underscoring the severity of the assault.

The Cambodian armed forces, adhering strictly to the ceasefire agreement, did not retaliate but instead held their positions to shield the population. Officials in Phnom Penh have condemned Thailand’s repeated provocations as a blatant violation of both the bilateral ceasefire commitments and Cambodia’s sovereignty.

“These actions are not only hostile but also unlawful under international norms,” said a Cambodian government spokesperson. “Targeting unarmed civilians and Buddhist monks with weapons is an unacceptable act of aggression that threatens peace and stability in the region.”

This latest incident is part of an alarming pattern of incursions by Thai forces along the border, heightening fears of escalation despite ongoing ceasefire arrangements. International observers and human rights organizations are being urged to monitor the situation closely and hold Thailand accountable for violations of humanitarian law and Cambodia’s territorial integrity.

The Cambodian government has called on the United Nations, ASEAN, and the broader international community to condemn Thailand’s aggression and pressure Bangkok to respect its obligations under the ceasefire and international law.

As Cambodia continues to prioritize peace and restraint, this attack raises pressing questions about Thailand’s commitment to regional stability and respect for its neighbor’s sovereignty.

Press Release from the Spokesperson of the
Ministry of National Defense of the Kingdom of Cambodia Phnom Penh, 3 August 2025

The Spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defense of the Kingdom of Cambodia would like to inform the general public and the international community that, according to received information at 10:49 a.m. on 3 August 2025, the Thai military, in cooperation with Thai authorities, has instructed its remaining civilians in the border area of Surin Province to evacuate by tonight.

The same sources also confirmed that the Thai military plans to launch attacks along the border starting from the Tamone Thom Temple, Ta Krabey Temple, Preah Vihear Temple, up to the Anseh area. These attacks are expected to commence soon, prior to the scheduled meeting of the Extraordinary Meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) on 7 August 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

This planned offensive constitutes a violation of the territorial sovereignty of Cambodia before the GBC meeting, and it is a serious breach of the ceasefire agreement mutually agreed upon by both countries on 28 July 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, with Malaysia, the United States, and China as witnesses.

Cambodia appeals to the international community to help prevent this at all costs and urges the Thai side to immediately stop its planned aggression, if this information is true, and to respect the ceasefire agreement fully for the sake of peace and stability along the border areas of both countries and the entire region.

Thousands of Thais Protest War and Government in Bangkok

Bangkok, August 3 — Thousands of anti-government protesters gathered in central Bangkok on Saturday, calling for the resignation of suspended Prime Minister Phay Thongsinghe Shinawatra. The demonstration, led primarily by pro-monarchist groups, erupted in response to growing public outrage over the government's handling of rising tensions with Cambodia.

Protesters voiced strong condemnation of the prime minister following the recent leak of an audio recording allegedly capturing a private conversation between her and Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen. In the recording, the prime minister is accused of encouraging military aggression against Cambodia — an allegation that has further inflamed the political crisis.

Chanting slogans and waving national flags, demonstrators accused Shinawatra of endangering national security and betraying the Thai people.

The protests reflect deepening political polarization in Thailand, with critics accusing the suspended prime minister of abusing power and mishandling foreign affairs. Security forces remained on alert, but the rally concluded without reports of violence.

Thailand has returned two of the 20 Cambodian soldiers captured on July 29, less than a day after ceasefire. The returned two soldiers are in extremely critical conditions, reportedly inhumanely tortured by Thai Army.
Back to the day, on 29 July 2025, at about 5 a.m., after the ceasefire, Thai military pretended to show friendly gesture and invited Cambodian soldiers for group photo. While Cambodian soldiers were unarmed and unsuspecting, other Thai soldiers emerged from behind and forcefully captured more than 20 of them. A few were able to escape while some other were shot dead. The remained 20 soldiers were detained. This act constitutes a grave violation of the ceasefire agreement, undermines mutual trust, and escalates tensions at a time when both sides should be striving for peaceful resolution. Such deceitful behavior not only breaches international norms but also puts the credibility of future negotiations at serious risk.

Royal Thai Army is not ready to return the captured Cambodian soldiers during the post-ceasefire, breaking its promise it made with Cambodian counterpart.
The Cambodian soldiers were captured about eight hours after a ceasefire with Thailand came into effect, says a defence ministry spokesperson.
