How far should a mother be allowed to go to protect her child from a predator?

That was the intense legal and ethical question sitting before a jury in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, after 43-year-old Erica Pereira da Silveira Vicente stood trial for taking matters into her own hands.

It all unfolded when Erica was alerted to alarming messages her partner, Everton Amaro de Silva, was sending her 11-year-old daughter. Moments later, she heard her daughter screaming and rushed into the room, catching him in the middle of a horrifying assault. What followed was an extreme act of self-defense: Erica fought him off, ended his life, moved the remains to nearby woodland, and attempted to destroy the evidence.

While local prosecutors argued that the severity of the act pointed to cold premeditation, Erica maintained throughout the investigation that her only intention was protecting her child. After spending a full year behind bars awaiting her day in court, a jury reached a verdict after just one day of testimony, clearing her of aggravated homicide and all related charges.

When a parent faces an active threat against their child in their own home, it raises a profound legal line between criminal retaliation and justifiable self-defense. Where should the law draw that line when immediate maternal instinct takes over?
