ប្រទេសកម្ពុជាមានប្រវត្តិសាស្ត្រ និងវប្បធម៌ដ៏យូរអង្វែងបង្កប់ដោយភាពសម្បូរបែបដែលស្ទើរតែរាប់មិនអស់។ ក្នុងចំណោមនោះ បុណ្យចូលឆ្នាំថ្មីប្រពៃណីជាតិខ្មែរ គឺជាពិធីបុណ្យវប្បធម៌ដ៏សំខាន់បំផុតមួយ ដែលជាទូទៅត្រូវបានប្រារព្ធឡើងក្នុងខែមេសាជារៀងរាល់ឆ្នាំ។ ពិធីបុណ្យនេះប្រៀបដូចជាការអបអរសាទរចំពោះការបញ្ចប់នៃរដូវប្រមូលផល ជាពេលវេលាដែលកសិករសម្រាកកាយ និងរីករាយជាមួយសមិទ្ធផលនៃកម្លាំងពលកម្មរបស់ពួកគេ មុនពេលរដូវវស្សាចាប់ផ្តើមចូលមកដល់។ ជាទម្លាប់ គ្រួសារខ្មែរតែងប្រារព្ធពិធីបុណ្យនេះក្នុងរយៈពេល ៣ ថ្ងៃ ចាប់ពីថ្ងៃទី១៣ ឬ ១៤ ខែមេសា អាស្រ័យទៅតាមក្បួនហោរាសាស្ត្រ និងមហាសង្ក្រាន្ត។
ទន្ទឹមនឹងការកម្សាន្តសប្បាយ ល្បែងប្រពៃណីខ្មែរដែលត្រូវបានលេងក្នុងអំឡុងពេលបុណ្យចូលឆ្នាំថ្មី ក៏មានអត្ថន័យ និងគោលបំណងយ៉ាងជ្រាលជ្រៅផងដែរ។ ល្បែងទាំងនោះមិនត្រឹមតែបង្កើតឡើងដើម្បីការកម្សាន្តប៉ុណ្ណោះទេ ប៉ុន្តែថែមទាំងមានគោលដៅអប់រំដល់យុវជនខ្មែរ ទាំងផ្នែក បញ្ញា និងស្មារតី។ តាមរយៈល្បែងប្រជាប្រិយទាំងនេះ កុមារ និងក្មេងជំទង់ត្រូវបានបង្រៀនឱ្យស្គាល់ពីតម្លៃនៃសាមគ្គីភាព ការប្រើប្រាស់ប្រាជ្ញាដើម្បីដោះស្រាយឧបសគ្គ ការប្រកាន់ខ្ជាប់នូវ យុត្តិធម៌ ការចេះអធ្យាស្រ័យ និងការកសាងមនោសញ្ចេតនាដ៏ល្អចំពោះគ្នាទៅវិញទៅមកនៅក្នុងសង្គម។
Cambodia has a very long and protracted history and culture. We can see that merriments related to culture are almost uncountable and the Khmer New Year is one of the most important cultural festivities in Cambodia. The Khmer New Year, or 'Bon Chol Chhnam Thmei in the Khmer language, is traditionally celebrated in April each year. This marks the end of the harvest season when farmers enjoy the fruits of their labor and relax before the start of the rainy season. Traditionally, Khmer families usually celebrate their New Year on the 13th or 14th of April depending on the lunar calendar and the festival lasts for three days.
Khmer traditional games that are played during the New Year, have their unique meanings and objectives besides being entertaining and for merriment. All of the games have been created to edify the Cambodian youths and to help maintain their mental and physical dexterity. Through these games, Khmer adolescents are taught to unify, use intellectual power to overcome obstacles, empower justice, appreciate values of forgiveness, power of love, and other desirable ideologies.
