The Legend of the Buddha and the Naga King (Mucalinda)
Long ago, during the time of the Buddhaβafter He had attained Supreme EnlightenmentβHe went to meditate beneath a great tree known as the Mucalinda tree for seven days. During this period, a sudden, extraordinary phenomenon occurred: the sky darkened, and a violent storm arose, bringing freezing rain that poured down for seven days and seven nights. At that moment, a Naga king named Mucalinda, who lived in a nearby pond, emerged to protect the Buddha. He coiled his body into a three-layered seat for the Buddha to sit upon and spread his massive hoodβmanifesting seven or nine headsβover the Buddhaβs head to shield Him from the wind, rain, and any bothersome insects. After seven days and nights, the rain ceased and the winds calmed. The Naga king Mucalinda then shrank back to his normal size, paid homage to the Buddha, and returned to his own abode.
