Writing a good paragraph involves several key elements, including a topic sentence, supporting sentences, a controlling idea, and concluding or transition sentences. Here’s a breakdown of each element with examples of each element
1. Topic Sentence
The topic sentence introduces the main idea of the paragraph. It gives the reader a clear understanding of what to expect.
Example:
"Regular exercise is essential for maintaining physical and mental health."
2. Controlling Idea
The controlling idea provides a specific direction for the paragraph. It narrows the focus of the topic sentence, indicating what aspects will be discussed.
Example:
In the topic sentence above, the controlling idea is “essential for maintaining physical and mental health,” which sets the boundaries for the discussion.
3. Supporting Sentences
These sentences provide evidence, examples, or further explanation to back up the topic sentence and controlling idea. They elaborate on the main idea and help to substantiate it.
Example:
- “Research shows that engaging in regular physical activity can reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes."
- "Moreover, exercise has been proven to release endorphins, which are natural mood lifters, helping to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression."
4. Concluding or Transition Sentence
This sentence wraps up the paragraph or provides a transition to the next paragraph. It can summarize the main point or suggest further implications.
Example:
"Therefore, incorporating exercise into daily routines can have profound effects on both body and mind, highlighting its importance in our lives."
Full Example Paragraph
Here is how all these elements fit together in a cohesive paragraph:
"Regular exercise is essential for maintaining physical and mental health. Research shows that engaging in regular physical activity can reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes. Moreover, exercise has been proven to release endorphins, which are natural mood lifters, helping to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. Therefore, incorporating exercise into daily routines can have profound effects on both body and mind, highlighting its importance in our lives."

- Topic Sentence: Introduces the main idea (Regular exercise is essential…)
- Controlling Idea: Specifies what aspects will be discussed (for maintaining physical and mental health).
- Supporting Sentences: Provide evidence and examples (research findings and benefits).
