In a place most people never notice, Luna was doing the hardest job of her life. Curled protectively around her newborn puppies, she barely moved. Their tiny bodies pressed close to her warmth, rising and falling in soft, uneven breaths. Every sound they made reminded Luna of one simple truth: they depended on her for everything.
The streets had never been kind. Hunger had followed her for days, and her strength was fading faster than she wanted to admit. Still, Luna stayed alert. A motherâs instinct kept her awake, kept her watching, kept her choosing her puppies over herself again and again.
But love alone wouldnât feed them.
After studying their sleeping faces, Luna made a quiet decision. She stood slowly, taking care not to wake them, and stepped away with a heavy heart. Each paw felt reluctant, as if her body itself didnât want to leave them behindâeven for a moment.
A short distance away, she found a small piece of food left behind by chance. It wasnât much, but to Luna, it felt like a lifeline. She ate just enough to keep going, then turned back, focused only on getting home.
Soon after she ate, something wasnât right. Her steps became slower, her body weaker. Still, she didnât stop. She followed the pull of her heart, guided by instinct, determination, and love stronger than exhaustion.
When Luna finally returned, she didnât hesitate. She curled around her puppies once more, offering every bit of warmth she had left. Even drained and unsteady, she made herself their shelterâsilent, steady, and unwavering.
