Mr. Tataua, now 62 and residing in Honiara with his family, recounted a violent incident on Marakei Island where he was attacked by a man wielding a knife. Despite being seriously wounded in his left arm, he intervened to protect the assailant from being harmed by others.
โI wanted to demonstrate that when you serve, even if someone threatens your life, it is important to act with professionalism and mercy,โ Mr. Tataua said in an interview.
The medal he received is among Kiribatiโs rarest honors, awarded only to individuals who have shown exceptional bravery in life-threatening circumstances.
Meanwhile, Pacific Islands Forum leaders are away on their retreat and are expected to return to Honiara this afternoon. In their absence, Te Uekera is featuring local stories, including the experiences of Kiribati nationals such as Mr. Tataua. A full report will follow.
