Heritage Luxury Hotels around the world (part 1) - if I could pick only 5, these are the most unique hotels I would revisit!

I started this account 11 years ago because I loved to travel authentic, yet chic, meaning: discovering the soul & heritage of a destination, while also sleeping in comfort & style, mostly at 4-5☆ hotels.
I always looked for accommodations with history, character & that authentic chic vibe, which is quite rare.

Over more than a decade I’ve found, tried & tested hundreds of unique stays, aka hidden gems, all around the world…

1️⃣ Hôtel La Mirande***** Avignon (France🇲🇫)
A classy 5-star hotel in the center of Avignon, dating back to 1309. This nobleman’s townhouse was transformed into a luxurious 18th-century-style mansion with direct views of the Palais des Papes.

2️⃣ Heritage Le Telfair (Mauritius)
A refined 5☆ plantation-style resort on a former sugar estate. Elegant colonial architecture, championship golf, several restaurants, a beautiful spa, pools & direct beach access create timeless Mauritian grandeur.

3️⃣ Althoff Hotel Villa Belrose (France🇲🇫)
This impressive Florentine-style villa sits high on a hill, towering over the chic fishing village of Saint-Tropez & neighbouring medieval towns. This 5☆ small-scale luxury hotel with high-end restaurant, spa, pool & amazing views, will make you feel like a movie star!

🇩🇪 ROTHENBURG OB DER TAUBER - CITY GUIDE 🏰 The ultimate fairy-tale town of Bavaria & the Romantic Road!

After 3 years I finally revisited this absolute gem last August in collaboration with . Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval towns: completely encircled by 14th-century walls with walkable ramparts, towers and gates. It truly feels frozen in time.

🚗 How to get there
• By car: Easy drive from the Netherlands in about 7 hours & major German cities (Würzburg 1h, Nuremberg 1.5h, Munich about 2.5h)
• By train: Convenient connections via Würzburg or Ansbach

🏨 Where to stay
• – We stayed in the spa suite with amazing views directly over the city walls. Ideal location in the city center & the perfect base for exploring!

• Walk the full circuit of the town walls (completely free and unique in Europe)
• Go photo-crazy at the famous Plönlein, Marktplatz, city gates and colourful side streets
• Join the atmospheric Night Watchman’s Tour
• Climb the City Hall tower for the best panoramic views
• Visit the Christmas Museum, Rothenburg Museum & Medieval Crime Museum
• Walk to the castle gardens, go outside the city walls into the vineyards & follow the scenic Tauber Valley trail for quiet hikes
• Enjoy a healthy lunch at .lebenslust

• Catch a w**e or seasonal festival if your timing is right

‼️HIDDEN GEM ALERT - GERMANY✨ This was my 2nd time in Aschaffenburg 🇩🇪… & loved it even more.
This town always feels so refreshing! It’s much lesser-known, with fewer tourists & a more relaxed (& often more affordable) atmosphere than the bigger highlights around Bavaria.

The perfect stopover on a trip to Austria or Italy but also great to combine on a road trip to the more famous towns along the Romantic Road.

Why Aschaffenburg is worth a stop:
• The impressive red-sandstone Schloss Johannisburg🏰
• The one-of-a-kind Pompejanum (a full-scale Roman villa reconstruction, can you believe this is Germany?!)🏛
• Stunning authentic architecture, churches & monuments in the old town📸
• Peaceful riverside parks, Schöntal Park with its ruins & the 18th century Schönbusch Park & Palace🌿
• Nearby nature reserves with wild Przewalski horses on Erbig hill🐎
Fun fact: King Ludwig I of Bavaria loved the mild climate so much he nicknamed Aschaffenburg his “Bavarian Nice.”

🇩🇪‼️HIDDEN GEM ALERT: EREMITAGE BAYREUTH – GERMANY‼️🇩🇪
Just outside Bayreuth lies one of the most magical (& underrated) places in Franconia: the Eremitage.

Why it’s a must-visit:
✨ Peaceful, romantic atmosphere with winding paths, ponds, fountains & stunning views all around
✨ Fascinating history of courtly “hermit” life turned Rococo masterpiece
✨ Perfect mix of nature, architecture & quiet beauty, with a café & plenty of seating options
✨ Parking, as well as entrance to the entire park is FREE (you only pay if you want to go inside the palaces)

This stunning late-Baroque landscape park was a birthday gift in 1735 from Margrave Friedrich to his wife Wilhelmine (sister of Frederick the Great). She transformed the former “hermitage” into one of Germany’s finest 18th-century garden complexes with water features, artificial ruins, grottoes, the Old Palace & the New Palace with its Sun Temple.

This hidden gem is so beautiful, tranquil & truly felt like a secret world, just 10 minutes from the city.

✨ Würzburg in Franconia - Germany blew me away, even the 2nd time around! It’s one of my favourite stops in Bavaria & the perfect starting point of the Romantic Road🇩🇪

This lively university city on the Main River is the official northern gateway to the route, with grand baroque architecture, hillside vineyards and a relaxed riverside vibe, that make it extra special.

Why Würzburg is an absolute must-visit:
• The UNESCO Residenz is pure wow (the Tiepolo ceiling fresco is larger than the one in the Sistine Chapel!)🏰
• Sunset with a glass of local Silvaner on the Old Main Bridge is pure magic🍷
• Marienberg Fortress delivers the best panoramic views🤩
• A short boat ride to Veitshöchheim reveals one of Europe’s finest intact Rococo gardens🌿🛳

A refreshing lesser-known town just north of the Romantic Road which I got to explore for the 2nd time in collaboration with last month. And I discovered even more beauty, as you can see in this 🎥.
This relaxed riverside gem is full of character with far fewer crowds.

🚗 How to Get There
• From the Netherlands: Easy 5–6.5 hour drive
• By plane: Fly to Frankfurt (closest, then 45–60 min by train or car) or Nuremberg (then 1.5 hours)
• By train: Convenient connections via Frankfurt or Nuremberg make it very doable without a car.

🏨 Where to Stay
• – Comfortable 4-star hotel in a super central location with an excellent breakfast. Perfect base for exploring on foot.

🏰 Must-Do Experiences
• Explore the striking red-sandstone Schloss Johannisburg (one of Germany’s finest Renaissance palaces)
• Visit the unique Pompejanum – a full-scale reconstruction of a Roman villa from Pompeii with its Mediterranean garden

🌸 DAHLIA SEASON IN NOORDWIJK = 🔛JUST A FEW MORE WEEKS TO VISIT 🌼
In spring the Bollenstreek of my homeland 🇳🇱 is famous for its tulips, but from August-October the region turns into a sea of colourful dahlias.

The most fun way to experience this is by following the official Dahlia Fietsroute of VisitNoordwijk Holland, like I did!

And did you know that:
• dahlias need lots of water & love full sun (at least 6 hours a day)
• Blooms keep coming from mid-summer until the first frost
• Regular cutting of old flowers encourages new buds to grow, sometimes even up to 4x per season
• There are tens of thousands different dahlia varieties today, from tiny pompoms to giant dinner-plate blooms🌺

🌺🚲SEPTEMBER MUST-DO: NOORDWIJK - DAHLIA CYCLING ROUTE - NETHERLANDS🌼🇳🇱
Last week I escaped to Noordwijk for a relaxing seaside staycation between the dunes & the Bollenstreek & I have the ULTIMATE TIP for you!
In spring this region is all about tulips, but from August to October this area transforms into a sea of vibrant dahlias!🌸

The best way to experience it? Follow the official Dahlia Cycling Route of VisitNoordwijk Holland.
You can rent e-bikes from .vandam in Noordwijkerhout to easily cover this scenic 36 km loop (or just go for the highlights, like we did).

1️⃣ .love.dahlia.pluktuin (Noordwijkerhout)
Huge organic pick-your-own & show garden with 500+ varieties on 10,000 m². Cut your own bouquet (full bucket +/-25 stems for €24.95 including entry & drinks). Open for special cutting days on Tue, Thu. evenings & Saturdays until 26 Sept.

2️⃣ (Voorhout)
Impressive free show garden with food, drinks, 600+ dahlia varieties + pick-your-own field (pay per flower). They also offer guided excursions, a terrace, shop & kids’ treasure hunt. Open daily until 11 Oct.

3️⃣ Lunch .voliere (Noordwijkerhout)
Atmospheric lakeside stop for a relaxed lunch with beautiful views, the perfect mid-route break with delicious food😋

4️⃣ Dahlia Garden at (Lisse)
One of the most photogenic free spots! Here you’ll find 150+ varieties in the castle gardens + Frederik’s Hof with dahlias blooming until +/- mid-October. Romantic 1600’s castle backdrop, hikes on a 240-hectare estate, petting zoo & farm terrace.

This bike route offers scenic countryside views, free flower fields, history, a great lunch & the chance to take a colourful piece of the Bollenstreek home🌺
