Follow this sailing tutorial to learn how to tack using your autopilot in light winds up to 8-10 knots. This is a single-handed tacking manoeuvre on a 38 foot boat with an overlapping genoa, but will work on smaller and larger boats where you can control the headsail yourself. ⛵️
If you have any questions let us know in the comments.
STEP 1 Prepare the windward winch by giving it 1-2 turns. If your boat has a mainsheet traveller, secure it in place.
STEP 2 Initiate tacking by pressing the button to start turning the boat.
STEP 3 Prepare to release the sheet on the loaded winch, but wait until the genua is backing. This helps the boat turning faster. Now release the sheet.
STEP 4 Quickly switch to the new leeward winch and pull the sheet as quick as possible to trim the sail in.
STEP 5 When the jib is ready, trim the traveller back to its ideal position.
ℹ️ If you wait for the right moment to release the sail and pull it in quickly, you will not need to use the winch handle to trim the sail.
🏆 Marks on the sheeting points will help you to find the same position on the new tack
