Freshman year is wild, senior year is focused, but junior year? It’s the quiet storm no one prepares you for. In this honest and introspective piece, one of our reporters reflects on the uncertainty, pressure, and identity-searching that define the “in-between” chapter of college life.

“In the end, I cling to a simple hope: that if we stick it out, we’ll emerge on the other side with a clearer vision of our uncharted paths.”

As Trump’s second term unfolds, international students in the US are confronting a wave of visa terminations, arrests, and scholarship freezes. Over 4,700 students have been removed from SEVIS, with many left in legal limbo.

From silencing activism to slashing funding for programs like Fulbright, the administration’s actions are reshaping U.S. higher education. Even elite universities aren’t safe, with multi-billion-dollar research grants now on the chopping block.

Is US academia still a safe haven for global talent? Or has it become a battleground for political agendas?

In the April issue’s Culture section, we dive into one of the year’s most provocative films: The Substance. Demi Moore makes a stunning return in Coralie Fargeat’s latest body-horror masterpiece, playing a washed-up Hollywood icon who takes a shot at youth and perfection. One injection gives her a flawless new version of herself… but only for a week.

More than just shocking visuals and grotesque transformations, The Substance is a bold critique of the beauty industry, aging, and the price women pay to stay relevant. Moore delivers one of her most daring performances to date, and it’s no surprise the film swept major awards this season.

Just as many industries have had a complete paradigm shift with the use of AI, it has now found itself changing journalism as we know it. In our April issue’s Society Debate, we discuss about Il Foglio, an Italian daily newspaper that published the world’s first artificial intelligence (AI) newspaper. The newspaper was written and illustrated entirely by AI, featuring 22 articles, three editorials, and AI-generated photographs.

Would you trust a newspaper written by AI?

🌸THE KAIST HERALD APRIL ISSUE IS OUT NOW!🌸

As midterms approach and the semester hits full stride, our April issue brings timely stories that spark reflection, awareness, and conversation.

In this month’s issue, we spotlight a lecture by Dr. Anders Nordström, former Acting Director-General of the World Health Organization. Drawing from decades of experience in global health diplomacy, he shared urgent insights on today’s health challenges, from climate-linked diseases to the global obesity crisis, while also reminding students that engineers and policymakers play just as vital a role as doctors.

We also cover KAIST’s recent exclusion from the QS World University Rankings following an email controversy within one of the departments. The piece breaks down how this incident unfolded, KAIST’s official response, and what this means for the university’s global standing.

For our Feature Page, we look behind the curtain of Korea’s entertainment industry. As K-pop and K-dramas continue to captivate global audiences, we examine the harsh realities behind the fame. Here we discuss the rise of cancel culture and its devastating consequences for celebrities facing public backlash.

⭐️THE KAIST HERALD MARCH ISSUE IS OUT NOW!⭐️

As we step into the Spring 2025 semester, we are thrilled to bring you our first issue of the year, now with a fresh new look!✨

This month’s issue covers major breakthroughs both inside and outside KAIST. A new joint venture with the Taiwan Formosa Group is set to transform biomedical research with an 18-billion KRW investment. At the same time, KAIST has expanded its cultural footprint with the long-awaited opening of the KAIST Art Museum. On the topic of careers, students explored exciting opportunities at the 2025 Spring KAIST Career Fair, connecting with top employers like Samsung, POSCO, and Amazon.

Beyond KAIST, global markets are experiencing turbulence, with “Trump 2.0” tariffs imposing heavy restrictions on key industries like steel, semiconductors, and automobiles. As economies worldwide adjust to these shifts, the impact on innovation, trade, and technology remains uncertain.

For our Feature Page, we take a deep dive into how we define personality and the growing fascination with classification systems such as MBTI, astrology, and blood types. From ancient theories of temperament to modern-day viral quizzes, we explore how these frameworks shape our self-perception and interactions with others. Whether you’re an INFP, a Capricorn, or skeptical of it all, we challenge the readers to reflect on what truly defines us beyond predetermined categories.

Don’t miss this month’s curated stories of innovation and achievement. Grab your copy from newsstands around the Daejeon campus or view the print format through the link in our bio!
