KAIST was named Korea’s most outstanding university in the 2025 INUE–Korea Economic Daily University Evaluation.

According to a survey of 5,000 INUE members, respondents in their teens through 50s identified KAIST as the nation’s most outstanding university, reflecting strong public confidence across generations. The assessment was based on academic and research achievements as well as objective measures of excellence.

KAIST attributed this improvement to its meticulous admissions and selection process, which comprehensively evaluates a student’s academic performance, student reports, personal statements, and letters of recommendation. This holistic approach identifies candidates with the “KAIST DNA”—students who are both academically competent and deeply motivated to study at KAIST.

“People say that we have two homes: the one we grew up in and the one that helped us grow.”

When life is split across countries, where does ‘home’ exist? In our October issue’s Op-Ed, one of our staff writers reflects on building a life in Daejeon, the alien feeling of going back home, and the silent work of finding a support system far from family.

From step counts to sleep scores, everything is measured these days. Data can build habits and reveal patterns, but chasing perfect metrics can also fuel anxiety, drown out our bodies’ natural cues, and overvalue numbers that naturally fluctuate. In this article, we ask: when metrics swing and devices misread, how much should they shape how we feel about our bodies?

🎃THE KAIST HERALD OCTOBER ISSUE IS OUT NOW!🎃

The October issue brings campus updates and a wide range of stories from across the world.

First, KAIST has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with National Instruments (NI) and received 600 software licenses, valued at around 2.7 billion KRW. The tools are expected to support work in areas such as high-speed aerodynamics, low Earth orbit satellite communications, and computational guidance for reusable launch vehicles.

On the other hand, Professor Jin-Soo Kim donated 85,000 ToolGen shares (approximately 3.4 billion KRW) to launch a plant-based carbon capture center. Set to open in late 2025, the center is aimed at addressing global “climate and food crises.”

For this month’s Feature, we examine how protests take shape, including times when they succeed, when they don’t, and the role young people play in pushing societies to change.

What if the most powerful technology ever built arrives before we’re ready? AI 2027, a paper written by AI Futures Project, outlines a near-future scenario where superhuman AI disrupts our daily lives at a pace no one can keep up with. Although it is a work of speculative fiction, it provides a strong reminder that the question we should be asking isn’t whether AI will change the world, but rather whether we’ll be ready when the time comes.

The hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters has become one of the most-viewed movies in Netflix history. However, beyond its catchy songs and vibrant visuals lies the revival of Korean shamanism in pop culture.

Once seen as relics of the past, this traditional belief is finding new life among the younger generations by reemerging across films, dramas, and various digital media. While many turn to shamanism for comfort in times of uncertainty, its rising popularity has also blurred the line between belief and business, raising concerns about misinformation and exploitation.

On September 8, mass protests led by Nepal’s Generation Z turned violent after a growing public frustration over corruption and a controversial social media ban.

The initial peaceful demonstrations spiraled out of control as police opened fire on the crowd, resulting in 72 fatalities and the resignation of the former prime minister. At the same time, a historic event occurred after former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was appointed as Nepal’s first female interim Prime Minister.

As the elections approach, the nation now stands at a turning point. Will this youth-led uprising lead to meaningful political reform?
