📑 Mason Korea Students Shine at the 2025 IGC Research Showcase ✨️

The 2025 Incheon Global Campus Research Showcase brought together students and faculty from George Mason University Korea, Ghent University Global Campus, SUNY Korea, and the University of Utah Asia Campus to celebrate a semester of rigorous academic exploration. Hosted on the Incheon Global Campus, the event provided a valuable opportunity for participants to present their research findings, exchange insights across disciplines, and foster academic collaboration.

Throughout the semester, students from diverse academic backgrounds conducted research under the mentorship of faculty, delving deep into topics driven by their interests, academic ambitions, and career aspirations. From cutting-edge studies on climate change and its socio-economic impacts to innovative projects in visual effects and digital media, the showcase exemplified the interdisciplinary spirit of modern academia.

George Mason University Korea had a particularly strong presence, with nine faculty presentations and nearly forty student projects featured prominently. Among the outstanding contributions from Mason Korea students, two groups earned special recognition. Ray Skorb, a junior majoring in Computer Game Design, received the Outstanding Presentation Award for his impressive visual effects reel, showcasing creativity and technical skill. Additionally, Dayeong Choi, Mingyo Chu, Hakgeon Son, and Joosung Yoon secured the People's Choice Award for their impactful poster presentation titled "Diseases Impacted by Climate Change: Focusing on Economically and Racially Marginalized Communities."

The showcase not only highlighted the depth and quality of student research but also reinforced the value of cross-university interaction, allowing participants from all four institutions to learn from one another and gain new perspectives. It served as a testament to the vibrant academic community thriving at Incheon Global Campus, reaffirming the importance of collaborative inquiry and intellectual curiosity.

📌 May 18 Gwanju Uprising: Gwanju Trip

On Saturday, May 17, students and faculty from Mason Korea traveled to Gwangju to explore the Gwangju Uprising social movement sites. This trip was open to all Mason Korea students who registered, and a mandatory trip for the students taking COMM 326: Rhetoric of Social Movements and Political Controversy and INTS 346: Art as Social Action.

According to the Academic Affairs Office’s announcement about this excursion, the Gwangju Uprising or May 18th Democratic Movement developed as the aftermath of the assassination of long-time Korean dictator Park Chung Hee in 1979 and the subsequent military coup led by Chun Doo-hwan in December 1979. A series of student-led demonstrations took place in Gwangju in May 1980, however, they were violently suppressed by the military forces. In 2011, the documents of the Gwangju Uprising were listed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. Through this trip, students explored the legacy of the meaningful democratic social movement in modern Korean history.
