Even Pyongyang residents only eat meat on special occasions a handful of times a year. So when meat suddenly appeared at a steep discount in local markets, savvy shoppers quickly snapped up the stock. It was later revealed that the meat had been intended for party elites but was offloaded to markets after the meat accidentally spoiled and was no longer fit for elite consumption.

Prices of basic food staples like rice and corn have gone up more than 50% in recent months, thanks in part to inflation and sky-high exchange rates. Many households have struggled to keep up with the rising cost of living. Children in particular have been hard hit by malnutrition and often stop attending school as a result.

Last summer, massive floods killed and displaced thousands of North Korean residents along the Chinese border area. State media was quick to highlight construction efforts and aid missions to affected residents, but one year later, satellite imagery reveals the large disparity between different communities. Some villages have simply disappeared altogether.

North Korea has recently held memorial ceremonies for fallen soldiers and their families. While meant to glorify these young men’s sacrifice, the ceremonies have inadvertently served to demonstrate the scale of casualties and stir public discomfort with their soldiers being sacrificed in another country’s war. As a result, DailyNK sources report that the memorials have stoked resentment among many residents.

Can painting your nails be considered a crime? In North Korea, apparently it can. After reports that some teenage boys had been flirting with girls by painting their nails, twelve teens involved in the ‘incident’ were subjected to public trial in front of their classmates.

With Kim Jong Un headed to China to join in the Victory Day festivities, North Korean authorities have ordered a tight lockdown of nearby regions to guarantee the leader’s safety. Residents in Sinuiju, which Kim’s train will pass through on its way across the border and back, are under strict curfew. Even trade activities have not been spared disruption, as authorities are also halting cross-border freight traffic during the sensitive period.

Russia-DPRK relations are reachng new heights or, rather, new lows. A recent meeting between prosecutors from the two countries appears to include an understanding that Russia will assist in capturing and repatriating North Koreans who attempt to defect. Russia had previously recognized North Korean defector’s asylum claims in accordance with national law, but will now join China in forcibly repatriating North Korean refugees.

For many North Korean escapees, one of the most difficult aspects of adjusting to life in South Korea is navigating the linguistic differences. North Korea specifically avoids English loanwords, meaning that even basic words like “internet” can feel foreign to new arrivals.

Does reporting on North Korea make a difference? Recent changes at Pyongsan Uranium Plant suggest that international attention can bring about change - at least on the surface. Following DailyNK reports about potentially radioactive wastewater dumping, North Korean authorities have replaced a number of officials and enacted changes at the factory to avoid future “international embarrassment.”

Unlike in the past where marriages were often arranged and focused on family background, many young North Korean women are intent on marrying for love and look for good partners to raise children. The difference in expectations has led to frequent conflicts between generations.
