For roughly three months a year — July to October — humpback whales gather in Tonga’s warm waters, and it’s one of the very few places on earth you can responsibly swim alongside them with licensed guides.

The swim-with operators run small numbers by regulation, so the best dates go early. If a Tonga whale trip is on the list, now is the time to read up and plan it.
