Choco disappeared in 2021 from his home in Sacramento County, California. Despite long efforts, his family could not find him and eventually lost hope.

Four years later, an animal shelter in Lincoln Park, Michigan discovered Choco tied to a fence near Detroit. After scanning his microchip, the shelter contacted his owner.

With help from an animal rescue group and a kind stranger who donated airline miles, Choco was able to fly home and reunite with his family. How he traveled such a long distance remains unknown.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A woman has been sentenced to four years in prison for blackmailing soccer star Son Heung-min, a South Korean court said Monday.

The woman, identified only as Yang, was charged with extorting 300 million won ($204,000) from Son in 2024 after sending him an ultrasound photo of a baby that she claimed was his and demanding money to stay silent.

She later conspired with a man, identified as Yong, to try to extort more money from Son.

The Seoul Central District Court on Monday said Yang “lied” to Son, although she hadn’t confirmed whose child she was carrying.

The court said Yang denied the charges of extortion and attempted extortion. Yong, who confessed, was sentenced to two years in prison, according to the court.

The 33-year-old Son is among Asia’s greatest players. After a decade at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, the South Korean star joined LAFC in August.

South Korean news agency, Yonhap, reported in May that a women in her 20s and a man in his 40s had been detained on suspicion of attempting to blackmail Son in June of last year while he was still at Tottenham.

A husband who poured boiling water on the face of his Thai wife… Appears before police claiming it was “an accident.”

Police have applied for an arrest warrant for a Korean husband accused of causing burn injuries by pouring hot water on the face of his Thai wife.

The Uijeongbu Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced today (12th) that it had requested an arrest warrant for a man in his 40s, identified as A, on charges of aggravated assault.

A is accused of pouring boiling water from an electric kettle onto his sleeping Thai wife at their home in Uijeongbu on the 3rd, causing burn injuries.

The wife, identified as B, has claimed that A committed the crime to stop her from leaving, saying he “wanted to make her face unattractive so she wouldn’t meet another man.”

However, during police questioning, A reportedly denied the allegations, stating that he “accidentally spilled the boiling water after losing his balance.”

🇰🇷 November: South Korea adds 222,500 new jobs — the highest growth ever

The number of people employed in South Korea has continued to rise by around 200,000 for the second consecutive month.

According to employment statistics released by the National Data Office, a total of 29,004,600 people aged 15 and above were employed in November, which is 222,500 more than the same month last year. Although employment surged sharply in September and declined in October, maintaining the 200,000 increase level in November indicates that the labor market is seeking stability.

Meanwhile, youth employment continues to struggle. The number of employed individuals aged 15 to 29 decreased by 177,000, and the youth employment rate dropped to 44.3%, down 1.2% from last year — marking a continuous decline for 19 months. In contrast, employment among those aged 60 and above increased by 333,000, those in their 30s increased by 76,000, and those in their 50s increased by 2,000.

By industry, employment in manufacturing and construction continues to worsen. The construction sector saw a decrease of 131,000 jobs compared to the previous year, marking 19 consecutive months of decline. Manufacturing also lost 41,000 jobs. Although the sector has been weak for 17 months, the pace of decline has slightly slowed. The agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sector also recorded a reduction of 132,000 jobs.

The service sector showed mixed results. With the reduced impact of consumer coupons, the accommodation and restaurant sector saw a decline of 22,000 jobs, the first drop in four months. However, employment increased by 281,000 in healthcare and social services, 63,000 in business support and rental services, and 61,000 in arts, sports, and entertainment. These sectors helped keep the overall job market relatively balanced.

The overall employment rate reached 63.4%, the highest recorded for any 11-month period since data collection began. However, the number of unemployed people increased by 5,000.

A strange new service has recently become a topic of discussion in Seoul. Now in Korea, people can rent a boyfriend or girlfriend. 🇰🇷😯

This service is becoming very popular among individuals who want to experience a date without any kind of commitment, or who need a partner for social events, family gatherings, or other occasions.

A partner is booked through an agency, where you can choose the personality or looks you prefer. The meeting is said to be completely platonic, meaning strictly as companionship.

The service fee usually ranges from 50,000 to 100,000 won per hour, depending on the plan and activities.

Many people appreciate this service as an “easy option” that fits modern lifestyles and loneliness, while others see it as a sign that society is becoming increasingly isolated.

Crackdown on Undocumented Migrant Workers in Korea Pushes Farmers, Industries, and Businesses Into Crisis

Since 2023, South Korea’s Ministry of Justice has been enforcing a five-year plan aimed at reducing undocumented stays, leading to strict crackdowns on migrant workers without visas. Although the government claims the policy protects jobs for Korean citizens, the reality is that rural areas, factories, construction sites, and restaurants are suffering from severe labor shortages.

At a 5,000-square-meter minari farm in Cheongdo-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, more than half of the vegetables are at risk of rotting. Farmer Kim Sang-su is harvesting crops alone, sleeping only 2–3 hours a day. According to him, farming is impossible without undocumented migrant workers. In the village, the average age is 75, and there are no young people available to work.

In November, immigration officials raided three farms, arresting workers, fining the owners, and deporting the laborers. A similar situation is unfolding in large restaurants in Daegu city. Even after offering 1.5 times the minimum wage, business owners could not find Korean workers. When they hired foreign students, a raid resulted in a 7-million-won fine.

Business owners say that once all foreign workers are arrested, there will be no one left to work — and eventually, they will again be forced to rely on foreigners.

Currently, from rural farmlands to city factories, construction sites, and hotel-restaurants, South Korea cannot operate without foreign labor. However, the government continues enforcing crackdowns in the name of protecting public safety and Korean jobs. This strict policy, implemented without understanding the real situation, has pushed local communities, farmers, and small businesses into a deep crisis.

South Korea will provide 600,000 to 800,000 KRW per worker to companies that adopt a 4.5-day workweek, 🇰🇷

Starting this coming January, the South Korean government will offer financial assistance to small and medium-sized companies that introduce a 4.5-day workweek.

South Korea has one of the longest working hours among OECD countries. To support the government’s effort to reduce working hours, the Ministry of Labor has approved a budget of 27.6 billion KRW, along with an additional 1.7 billion KRW allocated for consulting services to help companies adopt this new system.

Under the program, companies with fewer than 50 employees can receive 600,000 KRW per worker every quarter, and up to 800,000 KRW for hiring new workers. Companies with 50 to 300 employees can receive government support for up to 100 workers.

As part of President Lee Jae-myung’s labor reform agenda, the goal is to lower South Korea’s annual working hours below the OECD average by 2030. In a survey conducted on the Blind app with 13,000 workers, 78% expressed support for a 4.5-day workweek. However, many companies say the change is too fast, pointing out that even the 52-hour weekly limit has not been fully implemented.

The Korea Employers Federation has warned that reducing working hours without improving productivity may weaken competitiveness. Currently, South Korea’s hourly labor productivity is 45 USD, which is only 80% of the OECD average. While Belgium has already made a four-day workweek legally optional, countries like the U.S., Japan, and Taiwan remain cautious about reducing working hours.
