Goodbye Hongdae and hello Bomun-d**g.

After living in and around Hongdae for more than 6 years, I have to say goodbye with pain in my heart. I have created so many memories, but it’s time to create new ones in a new place in a bigger house. A house big enough for my own YouTube studio!

Seongbuk-d**g, the neighborhood with a high concentration of ambassadorial residences, but also a Moon Village (‘shanty town’), a fascinating temple, gorgeous hanoks and above all warm-hearted, friendly and helpful people!

Nonhyeon-d**g is a neighborhood in Gangnam where many businesses revolve around the night industry. It’s also where the boys of BTS started their careers, and Baek Jong-won started his first business. It‘s a neighborhood unlike any other neighborhood in Gangnam, and that’s mainly due to the high concentration of night entertainment-related businesses. At first glance, you wouldn‘t notice, but the more time you spend in Nonhyeon, the more you realize how things differ slightly from other areas.

In the next post I’ll give you a night edition of Nonhyeon-d**g to get that night industry-feel!

Korea hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics, which was a big surprise. They won their bet against Japan against all odds. In the wake of the Olympics, the beautification of Seoul began, and Bangi-d**g transformed into what it is today. The Olympic Park and the Athlete Village take most of Bangi and carry the stories of Korea‘s big turning point: the 88 Olympics. This is Bangi-d**g!

1988년 대한민국에서 하계 올림픽이 개최되었습니다. 다른 후보지였던 일본을 상대로 승리를 거둔 결과였죠. 올림픽을 계기로 오늘날 서울의 미화 작업이 진행되었고, 그 모습은 현재의 방이동에서도 잘 드러납니다. 올림픽 공원과 선수촌은 방이동의 큰 부분을 차지하며 한국의 커다란 전환점의 이야기를 간직하고 있습니다. 바로 ’88올림픽‘입니다!

22 September 2022 is the day I drew Seoul’s map on the wall. This was the official beginning of the Welcome to My D**g series. Today, I had to say goodbye to this map. 66 (out of 467) neighborhoods were colored, and the map started to look pretty cool, in my opinion. It became precious to me and, therefore, extra painful to erase the whole thing. :(

Paying the rent for both my office and house became too expensive. So, I ended the contract. My wife and I will move to a different home with enough space for my new office. I will also draw the map again, but this time on a huge aluminum frame, so I get an epic art piece at the end of the d**g project. One I’ll display in my home (or someone else’s?😏).

Goodbye to the current map, but not goodbye to the Welcome to My D**g series. Let that be clear. Let’s do this until the end!

…and no worries, the new map will be as good if not better than the previous one. Thank you so much for the huge support and increase in following since the official beginning of 22 September 2022. I feel like I’m doing this project together with you and it feels good.

Back when tigers smoked pipes, the neighborhood of Namhyeon-d**g was a dangerous southern mountain pass with thieves lurking in the bushes. Today, it has changed a lot with, of course, a safe passageway through the mountain, but also the former Belgian embassy, an ancient Kiln site, and a beautiful temple. I also stumbled upon many random things I didn’t expect, so you had better watch the video to find out what it was.

First of all I want to wish you all a happy new year! 새해 복 많이 받으세요!

The National Folk Museum opened a new permanent exhibit “The Beginning of K-Culture” and you can see 8 of my Welcome to my D**g videos on display. You can find them on the little tablets at the end. They also interviewed me, Hwia and my friends Shawn (Muak-d**g, Jingwan-d**g) and Mia (Daerim-d**g) on K-culture. Bits of those interviews are now projected on the wall.

I was already honored by being part of the exhibit, but as a cherry on the pie I also received an award certificate from museum curator Na Hun-yeong for my active cooperation with the project. This is awesome!
