NOVAsia

NOVAsia Student-run magazine from Yonsei Graduate School of International Studies Please support us by reading, sharing, discussing and contributing to the magazine.

NOVAsia is a global affairs magazine of Yonsei University's Graduate School of International Studies. This student-run magazine covers current news and global affairs from an academic perspective, often focusing on the most pressing policy issues, economic developments and hard-power politics. Our diverse student population and magazine staff present a variety of voices from an international persp

ective, though we do tend to cover a fair amount of regional issues in East, SE and Central Asia. Our writers also bring to bear their academic expertise honed in their respective fields of international development, finance, culture and politics. This magazine acts as both an incubator for GSIS graduates who will go on to write for the mass public, as well as an opportunity to add new and informed voices on the issues that concern fellow Korean and international academic communities. We hope to see NOVAsia's reach grow, popping up in other university libraries as well as your family living room! The magazine is available in print format as well as downloadable PDF formats via our page. A website is currently under construction. Many thanks,
NOVAsia's Editor in Chief

From the financial pressures of raising children to the challenges of balancing career and family, many women face significant obstacles when deciding whether to have children. In this video, NOVAsia interviews Mira Lee, a visiting professor at Yonsei University and a leader in the HR field, to explore the reasons behind this phenomenon and get to know about her own suggestions on improving the situation of South Korea’s shrinking population.

In Korea, there are many types of housing — from high-rise apartments and cozy villas to small one-room studios known as officetels. But hidden behind the modern skyline lies another kind of housing that few people truly know about — the jjokbang (쪽방), or “tiny room.” These cramped spaces, often just 5 to 7 square meters, are home to some of society’s most vulnerable people. How did jjokbang emerge? How did people start living in jjokbang, and what is life like there? To find out, we met jjokbang residents and experts who shared their stories.

As an extended holiday week approached, South Korea witnessed fierce public debate surrounding the official September 29 beginning of a visa-free entry program for Chinese tourists. Intended as a pilot program, the temporary scheme is planned to run through June 2026. However, anti-China demonstrations against the government’s move to allow visa-free travel to groups of Chinese visitors have grown in size, location, number, and reach. Backlash has spread outside its typical boundaries, burgeoning from a fringe movement to a more general base of support thanks to the frictionless nature of wide-reaching social media platforms.

"The issue of transitioning toward an aging society is not exclusive to South Korea but is a matter of concern in many member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries, with South Korea ’s case being one of the most severe among them. On the verge of this worldwide demographic shift, the meaning of what it is to be an “elderly” is changing gradually. Around the world, the idea of what should be the retirement age is being reconsidered as a part of starting the systematic process to reform relevant policies."
