Hong Jin Kyung feature in Ceci Korea September 2003

“On August 3rd, we met model Hong Jin-kyung in Soho, New York. With her long limbs and effortless style, she stood out everywhere she went.

Currently working as a model in New York, she spent the day shopping with a friend, visiting Helmut Lang, Prohibit, and Paul Frank. Known for her sharp eye, she enjoys finding pieces that feel unique rather than trendy.

Not long ago, she opened her own select shop, The Bronx, near Hongdae. Because she travels abroad often, she personally brings in brands that are hard to find in Korea, focusing on original items and a true boutique concept.”

The shop reflected the early-2000s Hongdae scene, when models, stylists, and DJs were opening their own boutiques.

is a hot keyword in Korea this summer. It refers to the women’s fashion trend of wearing short crop tops without a bra that exposes the underside of the breast.

Although the underboob crop hasn’t really caught on with the general public anywhere in the world… its mostly influencers and celebrities that are seen rocking the risqué look, in Korea it has become highly discussed topic in the media. Why?

This is first time that female celebrities are exposing the underside of their breasts with nonchalance and that is very scandalous.

In 2009, late fashion model Daul Kim received massive online backlash after posing topless for an i-D magazine photoshoot. Although the editorial was published overseas, Korean netizens were outraged that she was exposing herself in that way. Late K-pop idol Sulli was also a victim of harsh criticism and bullying when she opted to go braless in her Instagram photos.

Knowing the potential for backlash the female Korean celebrities that are exposing their underboobs are quite brave but ... with kind of reaction don’t expect to see the #언더붑 take over the streets of Seoul anytime soon.

Wearing masks outdoors is no longer required in Korea since May 2nd! But if you look around all of the public spaces most people are still wearing them.

It’s no surprise given that residents are still recovering from the shock of the Omicron wave that hit the peninsula and reached up to 620,000 positive cases a day in March.

Some citizens explained other reasons as to why they would rather keep their masks on a little longer. Reasons include being able to bypass wearing makeup and not wanting to lose face by being the first one to do so.

Even though many people in Korea are still not ready to take off their masks, the fact that the choice is now present on top of most social distancing rules being dropped means that a return to true normalcy is in progress.

Say goodbye to the curfew and hello to hanging out as late and with as many people as you’d like! 🍻

Since April 18th the curfew in Seoul which forced businesses such as restaurants, cafes, and pubs to close as early as 9pm has been lifted. ⏰There is also no longer a limit in how many people can share a table or attend an event. 🎉

This means that for the first time in 2 years life is returning to true normalcy in Korea’s capital city. 🙏

❗️Quarantine is no longer required for those entering the country since April 1st.

Here is our roundup of the best Womenswear looks from Seoul Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2022 runway shows. As convention goes for Korean womenswear there was no shortage of femme ruffles and pleats!

Bombon () showed the most Y2K collection of the season with baby pinks, knits, and plenty of boots with the fur. The trend savvy brand showcased their own take on the micro skirt and other classics were given subversive modern twists. 🎀

Dew E Dew E (.dewe_official) stayed true to their vision of sweet and feminine fashion, this time inspired by the old west. 🤠To avoid looking drab, modern elements made their way into a few looks that include baby pink, micro minis, furry jackets, bold floral patterns, corsets and denim. 👖

BMUETTE () showcased another gothic Lolita-esque collection, this time featuring printed florals and to die for blood red and leather ensembles. Purple also had a strong presence making it a key statement color for the fall/winter season! 🕷🩸💜

What is your impression of Korean men? Is it informed by pop culture such as idols and dramas? 🌸Has it ever seemed to you that Korea has men who are maybe more of 𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓈 or less 𝓉𝒽𝒶𝓉 than the men from your place of origin?

Minjoo Lee, a professor of Women’s and Gender Studies at Wellesy College recently published an article on The Conversation titled “Why Some Women Are Traveling to South Korea to Find Boyfriends” 👩‍❤️‍👨where she describes her research on romance tourism to South Korea.

Romance tourism is the act of traveling to a country with the primary intention of pursuing romantic experiences that the tourist cannot experience in their native country. ✈️💭

What do you think of this phenomenon? We think its a topic worth having more dialogue about, because the stories usually do not have happy endings when expectations do not meet reality. 💔

Profesor Lee is currently writing a book called "Racialized Erotics: Korean Television Dramas, S*x Tourism, and In*******al Relationships," which examines the transnational popularity of Korean television dramas and how they generate erotic desires in their viewers for Korean men. We are eagerly awaiting its release!
