Zaldy Co resigned as Congressman!
Zaldy Co-ward’s way out: on the very deadline set by Speaker Bodjie Dy for him to return to the Philippines, Co chose resignation over accountability — quitting instead of answering allegations that he pocketed billions in kickbacks from flood-control projects, a racket that has drained taxpayer money, undermined infrastructure, and deepened public distrust in government. In a statement on Facebook, Zaldy said the decision was heavy on his heart, adding that it was made for the sake of his family and the people he has served.
In his official resignation letter submitted on September 29, 2025, Co cited “grave and imminent threat” to the lives of his family members and himself, along with what he described as a denial of due process.
He insisted that his resignation was irrevocable and effective immediately, with Ako Bicol Partylist tasked to inform the House of his substitute nominee.
The congressman also addressed the complaints filed by Rep. Toby Tiangco, who accused him of masterminding last-minute insertions in the 2025 General Appropriations Act, funneling billions into questionable projects.
Co denied the accusations, saying all budget items went through plenary sessions and bicameral approval, and argued it was impossible for him to insert funds without the knowledge of both chambers.
He further brushed off claims that his absences were unjustified, pointing out that medical certificates were not required for his approved leaves and that he has been consulting doctors abroad since 2024.
Co likewise rejected allegations that his family lived in extravagance or benefited from infrastructure projects awarded to Sunwest, Inc., describing them as “mere speculation.” He said their lifestyle had not changed since before his time in office and that his wife and children kept away from the media.
In his letter, Co said he would clear his office at Batasang Pambansa to allow a seamless transition for Ako Bicol’s substitute nominee.
