Quick action from the Cayman Islands Coast Guard turned what could have been a tragedy into a successful rescue mission just before 5pm on Friday.

The Coast Guard responded to a distress signal from a boat going down west of Stingray City. When crews arrived, they found three people in the water without safety gear, one of whom could not swim.

Sports Minister Isaac Rankine faced questions this week about athlete grants, including whether pro golfer Justin Hastings had requested support. Hastings told Compass he and his team never sought any sponsorship or aid from the ministry or any part of government, adding that he’s grateful for the community’s support. The Leader of the Opposition, Joey Hew, later said his question should have been directed to the tourism minister, but Hastings maintained he made no funding requests at all.

The Tourism Minister has confirmed that a third Saab aircraft for Cayman’s domestic air services is planned for next year. Hon. Gary Rutty told Finance Committee that the Cayman Airways board met this week to discuss adding the new prop plane for Cayman Brac. He also assured that work is progressing on the five-star Mandarin Oriental Beach Resort and Residences in Beach Bay, Bodden Town.
