“Scheme” won the Grand Prix at the Berlinale!

Farhat Sharipov's film was recognized as the best feature film in the Generation 14plus program. This is the second highest award won by our compatriots at the Berlin Film Forum – one of the most prestigious and authoritative in the world..

In total, 52 films were presented in the Generation section by cinematographers from 33 countries. 24 of them competed for the victory in the Generation 14plus category. The competition films were evaluated by an authoritative jury: Italian film critic and producer Paolo Bertolini, British-Australian director, screenwriter Rubika Shah and American animator, comic books author Dash Shaw.

‘Fire’ Review: A Low-Key Kazakh Comedy as Likeable as Its Hangdog Hero

A well-liked but debt-stricken family man is a stranger to good fortune but not to good cheer in this crooked, warmhearted debut.

Strange how it can feel like not a lot happens in a film that features unwanted teen pregnancy, spousal abandonment, mounting debt, a heart attack, a fistfight and a police chase that ends in a car crash. Even stranger that in the case of ​​Aizhana Kassymbek’s “Fire,” the impression of uneventfulness in a story packed with incident is almost entirely a positive thing: Kassymbek’s light, wry touch and her profound affection for the flawed decency of her characters siphon the gloom from what easily could have been a grim, gray social realist Book of Job, leaving behind instead a droll dramedy with a surprisingly tender and even emotional keel.

🔸The pitching of film projects has ended

The Expert Council of the Kazakhcinema has completed the consideration of film projects applying for state funding in 2021. Recall that this year a record number of applications were submitted for the competition – more than 500.
⠀
For five days, representatives of the film crews defended their works before the Expert Council chaired by the People's Artist of Kazakhstan Doskhan Zholzhaksynov. The projects selected based on the results of the pitching are now sent to the Interdepartmental Commission, which approves the final list of films applying for state funding.

Personnel changes took place in Kazakhcinema

By the order of the Chairman of the Board of The State Center for Support of National Cinema from August 02, 2021:

- Maksat Taurbekovich Merekenov, who previously held the position of Head of the Administrative Department - lawyer of Kazakhcinema, was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Management Board for Strategic Development.

- Aday Kunanbaevich Abeldinov, who previously held the position of Adviser to the Chairman of the Board of Kazakhcinema, was appointed General Producer - Executive Director for International Film Festivals.

- Torebay Kanat Ashirbekovich, who previously held the position of Deputy Chairman of the Management Board for Strategic Development of Kazakhcinema, was appointed Adviser to the Chairman of the Board.

- As the Head of the Administrative Department – lawyer was appointed Aliyev Saken Aitashevich, who previously held the position of a specialist in administrative and economic issues of the Administrative Department of Kazakhcinema.

- In connection with the transition to another job, Arman Tursunbayevich Asenov was dismissed from the post of General Producer - Executive Director for International Film Festivals of Kazakhcinema.

On July 21, 2021, the Chairman of the Board of Kazakhcinema Yessetzhan Kossubayev met with the CEO of Elite Education Group International, John Kim.

This year, the World Economic Forum recognized the Elite Education Group Int. a new champion in the field of public-private partnership. In other words, this company has a global network of partnerships with top universities, companies and government agencies around the world.

During the negotiations, issues of possible cooperation on improving the skills of Kazakhstani cinematographers for the practical implementation of the Law on Cinematography of the Republic of Kazakhstan were discussed. The parties agreed that film education is the foundation for the development of the film industry in any country, and Kazakhstan is not exception.

In turn, Y. Kossubayev informed his American colleagues about the beginning of the implementation of the large-scale project Golden Horde and the possible creation of an international consortium for the production of a film.

➖With the adoption of the Law “On Cinema” and establishment of Kazakh Cinema as a single operator in film industry, the national film community pays close attention to its activities. Tell us more about the main vectors and the challenges you are currently facing.

⭕ Indeed, the Law “On Cinema” became a landmark and was truly long-awaited by Kazakh film community. The launch of Kazakh Сinema was definitely timely and relevant. Our main responsibility - the implementation of the Law. In general, it can be divided into two main areas – support for national cinema and its promotion worldwide.
⠀
Despite all difficulties and problems, national cinema is reaching a new level of the development. Historical films as well as films reflecting modern challenges are being intensively and successfully shot. These achievements for Kazakh society cannot be overestimated. At the same time, it’s vital to present national films extensively to the international community. Such kind of promotion could lead to raising awareness of Kazakh film industry and attracting foreign investments to the country.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 pandemic, implementing these tasks became challenging, not to say impossible. Participation in film festivals, organizing and holding Kazakh cinema days abroad, attracting foreign investors were practically reduced to zero.

🔹Baurzhan Shukenov appointed Deputy Chairman of the Board of Kazakhcinema

Baurzhan Shukenov has been appointed Deputy Chairman of the Board for Production of the State Center for the Support of National Cinema. Baurzhan Kamalovich is one of the founders of the republican commercial film distribution. He worked on the promotion of domestic art films and support for the festival movement. For many years, he worked as the executive director of the Film Center “Arman”. Since 2019, B. Shukenov has been a member of the Expert Council of the State Center for Support of National Cinema. Prior to his current appointment, Baurzhan Kamalovich worked as an Adviser of the Chairman of the Board of Kazakhcinema.

According to the Chairman of the Board of Kazakhcinema Yessetzhan Kossubayev, the appointment of Baurzhan Shukenov to one of the key managers position symbolizes the new direction of the work of Kazakhcinema.
