A source from Luang Prabang province has highlighted the ongoing need for essential supplies to manage emergencies and facilitate the reconstruction process following the recent floods. Required items include rice, clothing, household goods, zinc, nails, and financial resources to restore critical infrastructure such as roads, electricity, water supply, and residential properties to their pre-flood conditions.
In July 2025, several districts in Luang Prabang province experienced significant flooding, notably during the stormy period spanning from July 21 to 23. Prolonged heavy rainfall triggered forest inundations, soil erosion, house submersions, and disruptions to agricultural areas, directly impacting vital infrastructure networks like power grids, water sources, roadways, and residential structures. The affected districts — Pak Ou, Viengkham, Chomphet, Nan, Xieng Nguen, Pak Xang, Phonxay, and Prabang Capital — encompassed 63 villages, 1,185 households, 762 individuals, and 475 women. Tragically, the calamity resulted in three fatalities and two women being injured, with an initial estimated damage cost totaling 1.97 billion kip. Chomphet, Nan, and Xieng Nguen districts bore the brunt of the devastation.
While initial repair efforts have been initiated for infrastructure rehabilitation, a detailed assessment of the overall damage value remains pending. Presently, the Provincial Disaster Management Committee has allocated funds to the District Committee for monitoring and oversight in Xieng Nguen and Nan districts. Moreover, a dedicated secretariat has been established to monitor weather forecasts, alongside a permanent committee center primed for disaster preparedness and response activities in anticipation of future contingencies. Residents residing in targeted villages along the Mekong River and its tributaries have been advised to vigilantly monitor water levels, preparing to evacuate belongings promptly should abnormal rises occur. Furthermore, relief efforts have included the distribution of clothing, rice, household essentials, and dry rations to affected families. The collective mobilization of various societal sectors has been encouraged to contribute resources and materials to support flood victims and formulate a comprehensive post-disaster recovery strategy.
