Vientiane Times, the first English newspaper in the Lao People's Democratic Republic, officially launched as a weekly tabloid in April 1994. By 1996 the newspaper published twice weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays, expanding to Monday to Friday in 2004 and adding a Saturday edition in 2007. The newspaper covers a wide range of domestic and international news and provides information reflecting governm

ent policy and socio-economic development in the Lao PDR.

Vientiane Times is part of the Lao Press in Foreign Languages, a specialised agency of the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism. The press agency is managed by a board of directors and manned by over 60 staff, including reporters and administrative officials. The founders of the newspaper included Mr Somsanouk Mixay, who is also Former Director General and Editor-in-Chief of Lao Press in Foreign Languages, Mr Savankhone Razmountry, who is also former Director General and Editor-in-Chief of the paper, Mr Thongsavath Chansombath the former Director General and Editor-in-Chief of the paper.

Cuban President visits Laos

The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of
the Republic, Miguel Mario Díaz-Canel Bermudez, is paying a state visit to Laos on September
6 to 7 to further strengthen the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two
nations.
Mr Bermudez’s visit comes at the invitation of his Lao counterpart, Thongloun Sisoulith, the Lao
Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release.
Born on April 20, 1960, Mr Bermudez joined the Communist Party of Cuba in 1987. He began
his career as an officer in the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces from 1982 to 1985, later rising
through higher ranks.
From 1993 to 1994, he served as Party Secretary of Villa Clara Province and was also a
member of the National Assembly.
On March 21, 2012, Mr Bermudez was appointed Vice President of the Council of State and
Vice President of the Council of Ministers, overseeing education, science, sports, and culture.
He became President of the Council of State and President of the Council of Ministers on April
19, 2018. Following constitutional amendment, he assumed the title of President of the Republic
of Cuba in October 2019.
Since April 2021, Mr Bermudez has also served as First Secretary of the Central Committee of
the Communist Party of Cuba. In April 2023, he was re-elected as President of the Republic for
another term.
