Vientiane Times, the first English newspaper in the Lao People's Democratic Republic, officially launched as a weekly tabloid in April 1994. By 1996 the newspaper published twice weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays, expanding to Monday to Friday in 2004 and adding a Saturday edition in 2007. The newspaper covers a wide range of domestic and international news and provides information reflecting governm

ent policy and socio-economic development in the Lao PDR.

Vientiane Times is part of the Lao Press in Foreign Languages, a specialised agency of the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism. The press agency is managed by a board of directors and manned by over 60 staff, including reporters and administrative officials. The founders of the newspaper included Mr Somsanouk Mixay, who is also Former Director General and Editor-in-Chief of Lao Press in Foreign Languages, Mr Savankhone Razmountry, who is also former Director General and Editor-in-Chief of the paper, Mr Thongsavath Chansombath the former Director General and Editor-in-Chief of the paper.

Inflation in Laos has slowed sharply this year, but people continue to face high costs of essentials such as electricity, water, healthcare, and education.
The Ministry of Finance’s Lao Statistics Bureau reported headline inflation at 4.5 percent in September, down from the previous month. The average inflation rate over the first nine months of 2025 was 8.8 percent, compared to 24.8 percent in the same period of 2024. (Read more below⬇️⬇️)

Flood warnings issued as river levels rise

People living in Pakse city, Champasak province, Phonhong district in Vientiane province, and low-lying communities in Bolikhamxay and Savannakhet provinces are once again on flood alert following several days of continuous rainfall.
The Meteorology and Hydrology Department said on Thursday the level of the Mekong in Pakse had risen to 11.28 metres, above the warning level of 11 metres and approaching the flood threshold of 12 metres.
In Songkhon district, Savannakhet province, the Xebanghieng River has rise to 15.3 metres, exceeding both the warning level of 14.5 metres and the flood threshold of 15 metres. (Read more below⬇️⬇️)

Luang Prabang is strengthening its sustainable tourism position as one of Asia’s most unique travel destinations by combining dynamic tourism development with the preservation of its rich cultural heritage.
