Vientiane Times, the first English newspaper in the Lao People's Democratic Republic, officially launched as a weekly tabloid in April 1994. By 1996 the newspaper published twice weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays, expanding to Monday to Friday in 2004 and adding a Saturday edition in 2007. The newspaper covers a wide range of domestic and international news and provides information reflecting governm

ent policy and socio-economic development in the Lao PDR.

Vientiane Times is part of the Lao Press in Foreign Languages, a specialised agency of the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism. The press agency is managed by a board of directors and manned by over 60 staff, including reporters and administrative officials. The founders of the newspaper included Mr Somsanouk Mixay, who is also Former Director General and Editor-in-Chief of Lao Press in Foreign Languages, Mr Savankhone Razmountry, who is also former Director General and Editor-in-Chief of the paper, Mr Thongsavath Chansombath the former Director General and Editor-in-Chief of the paper.

Anewly built library at Phialad Primary School in Sangthong district, Vientiane, was officially handed over to the school on Tuesday, in a ceremony jointly organised by Good Neighbors Laos and the Sangthong district education and sports office.

Lao-Viet Agriculture Company Limited has been granted a land concession to grow coffee, durian and blueberries on 50.4 hectares in Nonglear village, Pakxong district, Champasak province.
A ceremony for signing the concession agreement between the provincial Department of Planning and Investment and the Lao-Viet Agriculture Company Limited was held on July 16.
The Deputy Director of the department, Mr Bounmy Khamphithoun, represented the provincial authorities, while the Director of the company, Mr Vo Van Hai, signed on behalf of the investor.
This project entails 100 pecent Vietnamese investment, with a total registered capital of US$3 million. It aims to promote modern, clean and sustainable agriculture for local consumption and export.
The investor earlier signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on May 7, and has since completed all required steps leading up to the concession agreement.
The signing ceremony was attended by senior provincial leaders, including Deputy Governor of the province, Mr Somboun Heuangvongsa and other key officials of the agriculture and planning departments and Pakxong district.
