Dar el-Machreq (DeM) is a Jesuit print and digital publishing house established in Beirut Lebanon and selling worldwide. It all started with the Jesuit Fathers when they established the Catholic Press โal-Maแนญbaสปa al-Kฤtลซlฤซkฤซyyaโ in the year 1848. Al-Machriq Jo
urnal, Majani al-Adab, One Thousand and One Nights, and Arabic Language Principles were of its very first publications. In the year 1982, the publishing department was separated from the printing press and was called: โDar el-Machreqโ. DeM continues the mission by reinforcing the fields of education, culture, and inter-religious dialogue.

Over the years, Dar el-Machreq was characterized by creativity in authorship, classification, and translation. DeM has been keen to follow a firm linguistic, scientific, and artistic methodology in book production since the early beginning. Thus, its publications are consistent with the institutionโs mission represented by bringing the best publications to its readers in Lebanon and the world. In this perspective, DeM insists on cooperating with the finest authors and researchers in the various fields of humanities, religion, and general culture.

In the year 1908, The Catholic Press launched Al-Mounged Dictionary which became one of its main pillars. This dictionary was elaborated by the pioneer Father Louis al-Maalouf S.J. Up until 2021, 22 dictionaries were published, with more than half a million copies worldwide, and soon, the e-Mounged will become available for free to the public!

Dar el-Machreq offers university students and researchers, particularly in humanities and sociology, two high-level scientific collections: the first entitled โResearch and Studiesโ issued in collaboration with Saint Joseph University of Beirut, and the second entitled โTexts and Studiesโ. Add to these collections other Arabic ones related to philosophy and literature, as well as some studies in the fields of sociology, politics, religion, general culture and youth stories.

Religious and spiritual publications open new pathways that empower the mind and nourish the soul. These books include adequate appealing topics, from biblical and Koranic interpretations to interfaith dialogue, theology, and spiritualties. The Arabic Catholic Translation of the Bible is the heritage of DeM, and is available in various printed versions.

The series of Arabic school books by DeM is considered as one of its jewels. Kamal al-Chartouny and Mr. Elias Haddad, these books include a section dedicated to the local Lebanese market and another one to the Arab world. These series adopt active educational methods that put the student at the heart of the educational process. They also use technology for the benefit of education through interactive digital exercises. In addition to these books, there are history and geography textbooks elaborated by Dr. Edmond Chidiac and a group of authors.

In 1898, the first edition of Al-Machriq Journal was issued by the pioneer Father Louis Cheikho S.J. DeM has been committed to producing this cultural and universal scientific journal twice a year, where religious issues and world matters are discussed. This publication contains dialectical, philosophical, social, literary, and scientific articles in particular, in addition to artistic and linguistic articles, and relevant cultural insights.

In 2013, DeM surfed the electronic wave and issued its first e-Journal edition, issued twice a year. This digital journal is characterized by comprehensive and varied literary, religious, artistic, spiritual, and social topics which allow the reader to directly communicate with the writer and to give his/her opinion and comments on the articles. In 2017, the e-Journal was followed by the e-Machriq spiritual magazine which brings up, in every issue, a spiritual or theological theme inspired by the publications of our rich library. It was published two times a year in 2017 and 2018.

In 2014, Dar el-Machreq upgraded its paper publications through digitalization in the aim of shortening the distances and reaching bookworms in the digital era. These e-Books are available on many digital platforms such as Amazon, Google Play, Almanhal and Konooz Books. Today, we, at Dar el Machreq, faithful to our e-Readers, started creating and distributing our e-Books through our new Department of Communication & Digital Production.
