POPE LEO XIV BEGINS HISTORIC PILGRIMAGE: A MESSAGE OF HOPE AND INTERFAITH UNITY FOR THE PEOPLE OF LEBANON
The Apostolic Visit of Pope Leo XIV commenced today in Beirut, dedicated entirely to offering profound spiritual and humanitarian solidarity to the Lebanese people. Operating under the guiding motto, "Blessed are the peacemakers," the Pontiff’s three-day journey seeks to affirm the vitality of the local Christian community and promote the country’s unique model of coexistence among diverse faiths.
The extensive itinerary is designed to reach the hearts of the community, beginning with a deeply anticipated visit to the revered tomb of Saint Charbel Makhlouf in Annaya and a unifying gathering with bishops, priests, and religious figures at the iconic Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon in Harissa.
A major highlight will be an Ecumenical and Interreligious Meeting planned for Monday at the historically symbolic Martyrs' Square, emphasizing the Pope's commitment to dialogue and shared humanity across all confessions. The visit will also include moments of profound compassion, such as meeting with staff and patients at the Sisters of the Cross Hospital and a silent, solemn prayer at the location of the 2020 Port tragedy, reflecting sorrow and encouraging resilience. The pilgrimage culminates with a grand Papal Mass on Tuesday at the Beirut Waterfront, where tens of thousands are expected to gather in a monumental show of faith and community strength.
