A lion held captive in Baalbek… and the Ministry of Agriculture takes action!

The Ministry of Agriculture launched an immediate response upon receiving information about a lion being held captive in a facility in the Labweh area of Baalbek. It took the necessary legal and technical measures to protect the animal, paving the way for its confiscation and transfer to a safe and suitable location that meets the standards of animal welfare and care.

In this context, Minister of Agriculture Dr. Nizar Hani sent a letter to the Public Prosecutor of the Bekaa Appeals Court, Judge Marcel Haddad, requesting the appointment of a temporary judicial custodian for the lion until the legal procedures are completed and a suitable facility is secured for its care. The Labweh police station was notified of the letter's contents, and the Public Prosecutor of Baalbek Appeals Court, Judge Rita Harrou, was contacted. She instructed the facility owner to be appointed as the temporary judicial custodian for the lion until the confiscation and transfer procedures are finalized.

The Ministry of Agriculture affirmed that the swift and responsible response, along with full coordination between the Ministry, the relevant judicial authorities, and the Internal Security Forces, formed the basis for taking immediate measures aimed at protecting the animal, ensuring its safety and well-being, and preventing any mistreatment of it, pending the completion of the necessary procedures. The Ministry explained that the confiscation process will be carried out as soon as a suitable shelter is secured, in coordination with relevant associations and authorities. The lion will be transported according to established technical and legal procedures, paving the way for the necessary steps to be taken for its return to its natural habitat, while adhering to its safety requirements and relevant international standards.

Until the transfer is completed, the lion will be subject to regular monitoring and supervision by the Animal Resources Department of the Baalbek-Hermel Agricultural Directorate, in coordination with the CITES office at the Ministry of Agriculture.

The Ministry emphasized that it will continue to monitor the case until all legal and technical stages are completed, reaffirming its commitment to protecting wildlife, enforcing relevant international laws and agreements, and dealing firmly with any case of illegal detention or trafficking of wild animals.
