After enduring months of Israeli bombardment last year that killed thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands more, and amid continued attacks despite the ceasefire, Lebanese people now confront a quieter injustice from within.
The government has documented the death toll, tallied ruined homes, and filed diplomatic complaints, yet has launched almost no investigations into whether these attacks constituted war crimes.
In neglecting the pursuit of justice for its own citizens, the Lebanese state is violating international law and allowing others to shape the legal record of what occurred on its soil. A state that fails to investigate war crimes within its territory is, in effect, surrendering a core aspect of its sovereignty.
