(Indian Scops Owl - Otus bakkamoena) කරපටි කන්බස්සා, කොලර්ඩ් ස්කොප්ස් බකමූණා.
The selected region shows a pair of Indian Scops Owls (Scientific name: Otus bakkamoena), also commonly referred to as the Collared Scops Owl in Sri Lanka.
These small owls are highly adaptable and very common across the low country dry zone, including the Anuradhapura district, where they frequently inhabit home gardens, orchards, and wooded areas.
Here are the key details about this species:
Appearance: They are small owls, growing to about 18–22 cm in length. Their plumage is a mottled greyish-brown, which provides excellent camouflage against tree bark. A distinct feature is the pair of small ear tufts (feather horns) on their head and a prominent pale collar on the back of their neck.
Behavior: They are strictly nocturnal (active at night). During the day, they roost quietly in dense foliage or tree cavities, often in pairs as seen in your photo. When threatened, they stretch their bodies vertically and freeze to look exactly like a broken tree branch.
Diet: Their diet consists mainly of large insects like beetles and grasshoppers, but they also hunt small lizards, mice, and frogs at night.
Call: Their presence is easiest to detect after dark by their unmistakable call—a soft, single, questioning "wut?" or "whuk?" repeated at regular intervals of a few seconds.
