ඔහුගේ ජීවිතයේ විශේෂ වූ සන්ධිස්ථාන කිහිපයක් ඔබගේ දැනගැනීම පිණිස අප පහතින් සඳහන් කර සිටිමු…
මිලීනා සුමතිපාල මැතිනිය සහ යු. ඩබ්ලිව්. සුමතිපාල දෙපළගේ වැඩිමහල් පුත්‍රයා වන ජගත් සුමතිපාල මහතා 1960 අප්‍රේල් 30 වන දින උපත ලබා ආනන්ද විද්‍යාලයේ අධ්‍යාපනය හදාරන ලදී.
1979 දී පියාණන්ගේ අකල් අභාවයෙන් පසු වයස අවුරුදු 19 දී, පවුලේ සියලු ව්‍යාපාරික වගකීම් සහ සංවර්ධන කටයුතු ඔහුගේ භාරකාරිත්වය යටතේ ඉතා සාර්ථකව ක්‍රියාත්මක විය.
කලාව සඳහා දැඩි උනන්දුවක් දැක්වූ ඔහු, අහසින් පොළොවට (කයිරෝ චිත්‍රපට උළෙලේ 3 වන හොඳම චිත්‍රපටය ලෙස සම්මානයට පාත්‍ර විය) වැනි ජාත්‍යන්තරව පිළිගත් චිත්‍රපට නිෂ්පාදනය කළ අතර ගඟ අද්දර වැනි සම්භාව්‍ය සිනමා කෘති සඳහා සහය දැක්වීය.
ඔහුගේ දැක්ම ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ Racing, තාක්ෂණය හා පුනර්ජනනීය බලශක්තිය දක්වාත් ව්‍යාප්ත විය.
එමෙන්ම ඔහු වසර 12 ක් බෞද්ධ සම්මේලනයේ සභාපති ලෙස සේවය කළ අතර, 2016 සැප්තැම්බර් මාසයේදී, දකුණු කොරියාවේ සෝල් හි පැවති 28 වන ලෝක බෞද්ධ සම්මේලනයේදී, උප සභාපති ලෙස පත් වූ අතර, එමගින් ජාතියට මහත් ගෞරවයක් ගෙන දුන්නේය.
ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ පුරාවිද්‍යාත්මක උරුමයන් ආරක්ෂා කිරීම සඳහා ද සුමතිපාල මහතා දැඩි ලෙස දායක වී ඇත.
1988 දී, ඔහු ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ Billiards සහ Snooker සංගමයේ සභාපති ලෙස පත් වූ අතර, ඔහුගේ නායකත්වය යටතේ, ශ්‍රී ලංකාව රටවල් 47 ක සහභාගීත්වයෙන් ජාත්‍යන්තර තරඟාවලියක් ද පැවැත්වීය. ඔහුගේ උත්සාහයන් මෙම ක්ෂේත්‍රය තුළින් රටට ජාත්‍යන්තර පිළිගැනීමක් ලබා දුන්නේය.
රැකියාවෙන් ඔබ්බට, ඔහු සමන්තා සුමතිපාල මහත්මියට ආදරණීය සැමියෙක් වන අතර පුතුලා, වාගීෂා, චදු, සහ චතුල යන දරුවන්ට ආදරණීය පියෙකි. ඔහු ජනක, ඉරුක සහ ශවින්ද්‍රි යන දරුවන් ද දයාබරව සිය පවුලට පිළිගෙන ඇත. ඔහුගේ ආදරණීය මුණුබුර මිණිබිරියන් ද සමඟ එක්ව, ඔවුන් සියල්ලෝම ඔහුගේ උපන්දිනයට හෘදයාංගම සුභ පැතුම් එක්කර සිටී!

On behalf of all of us at Sumathi, we extend our heartfelt wishes to Mr. Jagath Sumathipala, Chairman of Sumathi Holdings, on his birthday. Today, we honour not just the birth of a remarkable leader, but also celebrate the legacy of a man who transformed responsibility into greatness and vision into lasting impact.
Born on April 30, 1960, as the eldest son of Mrs. Milina Sumathipala and Mr. U. W. Sumathipala, Mr. Sumathipala received his education at Ananda College, Colombo. At just 19 years old, following the untimely passing of his beloved father in 1979, he stepped up to shoulder the family’s business responsibilities. What followed was an extraordinary journey — one defined by unwavering commitment, innovation, and purpose.
From rebuilding and expanding Sumathi Holdings into one of Sri Lanka’s most respected conglomerates, his leadership has shaped industries and inspired generations.
A passionate advocate for the arts, he supported the production of internationally recognized cinema such as Ahasin Polowata (awarded 3rd Best Film at the Cairo Film Festival) and supported timeless classics like Ganga Addara.
His vision also extended into Sri Lanka’s racing industry, introducing structural changes that modernized the sport, and into technology and renewable energy, where he continues to lead game-changing initiatives.
He has proudly served as the President of the Buddhist Congress for 12 years. In September 2016, at the 28th World Buddhist Congress held in Seoul, South Korea, he was appointed as the Vice President, bringing great honor to the nation.
A patriotic spirit, Mr. Sumathipala has been deeply involved in efforts to preserve Sri Lanka’s archaeological heritage, always striving to balance development with cultural pride.
In 1988, he was appointed Chairman of the Billiards and Snooker Association of Sri Lanka. Under his leadership, Sri Lanka hosted an international tournament with participation from 47 countries — a groundbreaking achievement that significantly elevated Sri Lanka’s standing in the global cue sports arena. His efforts helped promote and develop cue sports locally, while fostering international recognition for the country in this field.
Beyond the boardroom, he’s a devoted husband to Mrs. Samantha Sumathipala. He is the proud father of Puthula, Vagisha, Chadu, and Chathula, and has graciously welcomed Janaka, Iruka, and Shavindri into the family. Together with his seven beloved grandchildren, they all join in celebrating and extending their heartfelt birthday wishes!
