Almost everyone who dreams of becoming a lawyer in Sri Lanka has to walk through the hallowed doors of what is fondly known as "රජුන් තැනූ පින් බිම" — Sri Lanka Law College.

On the 19th of January 2026, we, the 151st batch of this esteemed institution, took our first step into this historic journey with the commencement of the orientation programme held at the college premises, after successfully passing the highly competitive General Entrance Examination.

The formal sessions of the first day began with religious observances representing all faiths, followed by welcome addresses and motivational yet engaging speeches delivered by our very own Deputy Principal, Mr. Shehan C. Perera, AAL, and our Principal, Mr. Prasantha Lal De Alwis, PC.

The second day of the orientation programme was filled with inspirational speeches conducted by the Principal, Deputy Principal, and several distinguished alumni and eminent lawyers of the country. These sessions added immense value to our lives, offering insights not only into the legal profession but also beyond the confines of lecture halls. The day came to an end with the introduction of the official staff of the college, the people who quietly work behind the scenes to keep everything running. It was especially humbling to realise that the entire institution functions with just 43 academic and non-academic staff members, making their dedication all the more admirable.

The morning session of the third day was fully dedicated to introducing the oldest Law Students’ Union of Sri Lanka, The Law Students’ Sinhala Union, and the many other clubs and societies active within the college. As an enthusiast of extracurricular activities, I can confidently say that Sri Lanka Law College is rich with active and thriving student bodies that provide countless opportunities beyond academics. The orientation programme concluded with an engaging panel discussion and a Q&A session with our beloved lecturers, marking a meaningful end to a truly memorable experience.

The Equality Initiative of Sri Lanka Law College launched its flagship publication, Vortex 25, on 21st of August. This marked the first occasion on which the publication was released as a printed magazine, having previously been published solely as an e-publication. The magazine featured articles written by students of Sri Lanka Law College, along with interviews with several distinguished personalities, including former President of Sri Lanka Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Member of Parliament Sugath de Silva, former Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake, and philanthropist Sunethra Bandaranaike. These contributions focused on themes of equality, inclusivity, and reconciliation.

The launching ceremony was held at the Main Hall of Sri Lanka Law College. The Chief Guest was former First Lady and Founder of the Centre for Gender Studies of the University of Kelaniya, Prof. Maithree Wickremesinghe, while Member of Parliament Sugath de Silva, the country’s first visually impaired Member of Parliament, graced the occasion as the Special Guest.

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Wickremesinghe highlighted how stereotypes and stigmas have significantly contributed to the discrimination of various gender groups. She further noted that such treatment has been normalised in countries like Sri Lanka, emphasising the importance of law students stepping forward to protect the rights of marginalised communities. MP de Silva stated that the State must be more sensitive to the issues faced by persons with disabilities, and that true equality can only be celebrated when such individuals are treated with dignity. The Principal of Sri Lanka Law College, President’s Counsel Prasantha Lal de Alwis, commended the efforts of the Equality Initiative in promoting equality and inclusivity within society, particularly in shaping future members of the legal profession. Certificates were awarded to the contributors to the magazine at the conclusion of the event.

Bilaal Marikar and Januda Perera (myself) took part in the Brown Mosten International Client Consultation Competition 2025, representing Sri Lanka and emerged winners out of 23 global national teams! The competition is the foremost international competition for Client Consultation and this is the first time Sri Lanka has won the competition in it’s 40+ year history.

This is a win that took a village. We are super grateful for our coach Senuri and all the support we received from college and the Moot Court Bench in our journey to the international rounds. The competition took place at the University of Glasgow, Scotland and the entire experience was nothing short of surreal! The hospitality of the hosts made us feel so much at ease and ready to take on the competition. We met and made friends with law students from around the world, many of whom we are still in touch with!

The highlight for me was the night on which the semi-finals break was announced. Everyone was dressed in their cultural attire and everyone had so much fun learning about each other’s cultures. The semi-finalists were announced and we were beyond elated to see that Sri Lanka had made it through! Then it was time for the Ceilidh-a traditional Scottish dance where everyone learns the moves on the go. Dancing to Scottish tunes in sarongs will always be a core memory for us! The semi-finals were nerve wrecking but we stuck to the basics and performed. We made it to the finals alongside the New Zealand and Canadian teams who had also performed exceptionally well.

The finals were open for all to watch and it was quite the experience! The feedback session and the announcement of the winners followed shortly afterwards. Surreal is the one word I could think of to capture what we felt when we were announced as the Champions! The competition came to an end with the Closing Ceremony that same night and we were presented with the Brown-Mosten shield for the Champions amidst a cheer from all the teams!

Sri Lanka Law College Excels at the SLIIT 7’s Invitational Hockey Tournament 2025!

The Sri Lanka Law College men’s and women’s hockey teams showcased their strength, skill, and solidarity at the SLIIT Hockey 7’s Tournament 2025, an invitational inter-university hockey tournament organized by the Physical Education & Sports Unit of the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology. The tournament took place on the 28th August at the SLIIT Grounds, Malabe, from 8:00 AM onwards, bringing together teams from leading higher education institutions for a thrilling day of competition and camaraderie.
The Men’s Team, captained by Chandu Ranatunge, featured Chathdinu Weerasooriya, Nandasekaran Yashvanthan, Roshen Perera, Dulsara Ranasinghe, Yohan Ranasinghe, and Randheera Herath. The team delivered an outstanding performance, securing two impressive victories against NSBM and SLTC, while also battling their way to a well-earned draw against the unbeaten SLIIT B side.
The Women’s Team, led by Captain Tiani Goonewardene, was represented by Dinara Muthugala, Vinuri Ambegoda, Shashika de Silva, Dilhani Seneviratne, and Tenuki Samaranayake. Demonstrating confidence and composure on the field, the team advanced to the qualifiers, securing a notable victory against CINEC Campus before meeting NSBM in the subsequent round.
Beyond the final scores, the tournament became a stage for growth, unity, and resilience. Its conclusion marked not merely the end of a day’s play, but the beginning of a promising new chapter for Law College hockey.
We extend our warmest wishes to both teams for continued progress and success in the seasons ahead!
