Bank deposit, lending rate spread still high

LBTV – The spread between Sri Lankan bank lending and deposit rates remains high relative to its pre-crisis average, the Central Bank said.

This is despite falling interest rates, its Financial Stability Review (FSR) for 2025 said.

The FSR of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) highlighted room for further improvement of the domestic interest rate structure.

Sri Lanka food prices, poverty still high – World Bank

Sri Lanka’s economic recovery is unfinished with poverty, food prices and malnutrition still high, the World Bank says.

“Although progress has been made, the recovery has not translated into widespread improvements in welfare.,” its Sri Lanka Development Update says.

“Real output remains below 2018 levels. Although poverty is projected to decline in 2025, it remains double the 2019 levels.”

Malnutrition

Vulnerability remains high with an additional 10% of the population living just above the poverty line, the report said on 7 October 2025.

“Malnutrition continues to be elevated. The labour market recovery is slow with real wages and labour force participation well below 2019 levels.”

The World Bank has said an International Monetary Fund (IMF) austerity programme Sri Lanka accepted disproportionately impacted the poor.

The country got an IMF loan of about US$3 billion after it defaulted on foreign debt and the economy collapsed in 2022.

The collapse was blamed on mismanagement and corruption by the regime of then-president Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

The IMF deal was signed by former president Ranil Wickremesinghe, elected by a parliament controlled by the Rajapaksa family.

The present National People’s Power (NPP) government won power in parliamentary elections on 14 November 2024.
